Liu and his colleagues struggled to catch up with this trend and made new achievements that attracted worldwide attention. From 65438 to 0997, on the basis of successfully developing the prototype of AC drive electric locomotive, he promoted the research and development of the fourth generation electric locomotive and entered the late-developing track. At the beginning of this century, the AC drive electric locomotive with a speed of 200 kilometers per hour and a single shaft power of 1200 kilometers was successfully introduced. This indicates that China electric locomotive technology has entered the high-tech era. In recent years, a number of new products of AC drive electric locomotives and EMUs have appeared, such as Blue Arrow, Q9, Zhongyuan Star, Aoxing and China Star, which have been applied to thousands of miles of railway lines in the motherland. Among them, eight "Blue Arrow" EMUs have accumulated commercial operation120,000 km; A train of "Central Plains Star" EMUs has accumulated commercial operation mileage exceeding100000 km. In 2002, Liu personally served as the chief designer of the development of the first "China Star" 270km/h high-speed train in China, which was a complete success, and created a high speed of 32 1.5km/h in the Qin-Shen high-speed test, marking that the development of high-speed trains in China has entered the international advanced ranks. Today, the "China Star" train has been put into trial operation for more than 700,000 kilometers, which has brought great economic and social benefits to the country. On March 28th, 2006, five Shaoshan 4 improved freight electric locomotives were officially put into operation on Daqin Line, which simultaneously hauled 204 cars and transported 20,000 tons of coal from Shanxi to Qinhuangdao within 10 hour. This is the electric locomotive with the largest traction designed in China at present.

Liu grew up with the development of electric locomotives in China. He added luster to the motherland, and the motherland and people rewarded his creative work. He used to be the dean and doctoral supervisor of Tongji University Railway and Urban Rail Transit Research Institute, and was responsible for guiding 6 doctoral students. Since 2005, he has served as dean's consultant, adjunct professor and doctoral student of School of Electrical Engineering, Beijing Jiaotong University. Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Factory has a postdoctoral workstation, and there are already four postdoctoral fellows (three left, and now there is one left). He is also committed to this work. Zhuzhou Institute of Technology is preparing to build Hunan University of Technology. Recently, the local leaders have hired the honorary president of Wei Liu. Liu has a strong sense of responsibility for training graduate students and others, and he must be present in person when he first enrolls graduate students.
