Mountford's famous saying: "The city is a container of culture." Indeed, different city features and street landscapes are the most direct ways for us to distinguish and understand different cultures. Urban architecture is called "solidified music", which carries and solidifies not only architectural art, but also social culture, historical culture, national culture, regional culture and political culture in different periods.

The formation of China's modern metropolis mainly comes from two different histories: first, some port cities, such as Shanghai, Hongkong and Dalian, formed today's urban pattern and appearance mainly under the management of foreigners during colonial rule or foreign colonization; Second, historical and cultural ancient cities, such as Beijing, Nanjing, Xi 'an, etc., are mainly managed, built and transformed by China people in recent decades, forming today's urban appearance.

Architects and planning experts believe that the urban renewal movement characterized by large-scale transformation under the guidance of modernist theory since World War II has almost no successful precedent in the west, and we should recognize many new theoretical and practical values such as "community development" planning, evolutionary planning, public choice planning, historical block restoration, small-scale transformation and residents' self-construction. This paper will briefly introduce the urban construction culture from five aspects: the comparison of urban planning between Beijing and Nanjing, the new Beijing from 1950s to 1990s, the "Hong Kong model" of urban construction, the popular culture in architecture and the city at the crossroads.
