In the works of Roman writers Terrence and Cicero, the word evolved into the meaning of writing and style, indicating a certain way of expressing ideas in words. British, French and German styles all come from this. The word "Chinese style" has appeared in Jin people's works (see Ge Hong's Bao Puzi, etc. ) refers to people's demeanor and personality. In Liu Xie's Wen Xin Diao Long in the Southern Dynasties, it refers to the style pattern of the article. At the latest, in the works of painting history in Tang Dynasty, style was used as the language to evaluate painting art. Since modern times, this word has been widely used in aesthetics, literature, art, literary criticism and other fields.
Style is different from general artistic features or creative personality. It is a relatively stable, more internal and deeper external mark expressed through artistic works, thus reflecting the internal characteristics of the times, nations or artists, such as ideas, aesthetic ideals, spiritual temperament and so on. The formation of style is a sign that an era, a nation or an artist transcends the naive stage in art and gets rid of the shackles of various modes, thus tending to or reaching maturity.
