The whole story of Zhejiang University's paper fraud incident
On June 5438+1October1day, 2008, Dai Dezai, a professor of pharmacology and doctoral supervisor at China Pharmaceutical University, received a letter from the deputy editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Cardiology (hereinafter referred to as IJC), saying that a paper submitted by Dai Dezai's laboratory to this journal was extremely different from that published in another journal. After consulting, Dai Dezai found that the first author of the "Twin Paper" published earlier than him was He Haibo, a doctor who graduated from his laboratory two years ago.

These two "twin papers" used different drugs. One animal pathological model is cardiomyopathy and the other is myocardial infarction, but their data and charts are completely consistent, even some related paragraphs are the same. Because He Haibo didn't make a fake during his three years in DeDezai's laboratory, DeDezai carefully reviewed two manuscripts, but finally decided that He Haibo had plagiarized the laboratory materials, pieced together a forged paper and published it.

At this time, He Haibo has graduated with a Ph.D. and entered the postdoctoral mobile station of Zhejiang University School of Pharmacy. In July 2008, three months before the incident, he was hired as an associate professor by Zhejiang University.

He Haibo's co-tutor in Zhejiang University School of Pharmacy is Li, an academician of China Academy of Engineering and dean of Zhejiang University School of Pharmacy. Li's name is listed in the column of fake paper authors found in the magazine editorial department. The situation is grim. On June 5438+1October 65438+May, 2008, Dai Dezai forwarded the full text of IJC's letter and two papers in pdf format to the executive vice president of School of Pharmacy, Zhejiang University, asking the other party to investigate.

According to the investigation results of the investigation team of Zhejiang University, except for 1 published in 2007, the other seven papers were published after June 2008, that is, before and after He Haibo was hired as an associate professor. Academician Li's name is listed in the author column of all fake papers.

The news spread like wildfire in the internal investigation team of Zhejiang University. On123/2008, 10, the academic fraud website "New Threads" exposed the first news that Academician Li's academic papers were suspected of fraud. Subsequently, more and more news began to be published on this website.

With the exposure of more news, among the papers published by Academician Li's research group after 2006, * * * 16 were accused of forgery, plagiarism or multiple contributions, of which only half were signed by He Haibo, and all articles were signed by Li.

According to Yang Wei, president of Zhejiang University, on June 26th, 2008, after receiving the tip-off letter 10 from Dai Dezai, He Haibo submitted a "self-criticism" to the school, admitting that forgery was a personal act. "Everything I did was done in secret without the knowledge of Academician Li, and without the consent of Teacher Li, he put his name in my name.

He Haibo's review was also recognized by the investigation team of Zhejiang University, which issued a statement saying that He Haibo's fraud was a personal act. Yang Wei even put forward the "motivation theory" that "the exposed fraudulent papers were not published in the top journals of the industry, which was of little significance to the outstanding academician Li, and Li had no motivation to falsify".

"The reason why we decided that Academician Li didn't make fraud is because not only He Haibo, but all the students who participated in the written examination of fraud unanimously said that Academician Li didn't know about it." Dan Ling, director of the Information Office of Zhejiang University, told China Newsweek.

He Haibo's review failed to be understood. In view of this serious academic fraud, Zhejiang University held an office meeting of the president on June 5438+065438+1October 3, 2008, announcing the revocation of the post and qualification of Associate Professor He Haibo, and said that if any academic unethical behavior related to this was found, it would be investigated to the end.

However, after He Haibo packed his things and left, the incident became more dramatic. On June 5438+065438+1October 18, 2008, Zhu Guoguang, the executive director of the World Society of Traditional Chinese Medicine, who settled in Finland, sent his first letter to Zhejiang University, alleging that three papers of Academician Li were untrue. On February 6, 2008, 65438, Zhu Guoguang sent another letter, pointing out that many papers with Academician Li as the first author had been submitted.

During the period of receiving these two letters, Yang Wei, president of Zhejiang University, received faxes from the editors-in-chief of two foreign periodicals. The general content is that the two journals have published very similar articles and hope that the university will conduct an internal investigation. "So I launched a wider investigation. We checked all the information that can reflect the problem in the school, including finance, scientific research declaration and so on. " Yang Wei said.

On February 2, 65438, in Yang Wei's reply to a letter from the editor-in-chief of these two journals, Yang Wei asked the other party to tell him whether there was any relevant evidence to prove that the statement that other signed authors didn't know in advance was not valid. At the same time, Yang Wei also sent the same letter to other related journals.

At the same time, Zeng Su, Party Secretary and Executive Vice President of Zhejiang University School of Pharmacy, and Yang Wei, Dean of Zhejiang University, successively asked Li about the situation. Yang Wei found Lee twice. "President Yang is very responsible and meticulous." Li recalled.

On February 26, 2008, at 65438, Li sent a written letter to the school, stating that I knew nothing about all forged papers, and I didn't know the stolen signature until it was exposed. Just after the media and the public began to pay attention to this incident, unexpected changes took place.

While explaining the paper storm, Li pointed out that Zhu Guoguang, a senior consultant of Tianjin Tasly Pharmaceutical Company, wrote a letter to Zhejiang University and exposed his paper fraud on the Internet for commercial purposes. Not long ago, Li just came to a research result: Tasly's "Compound Danshen Dripping Pill" has serious toxic and side effects.

This statement was strongly countered by Tasly. Tasly immediately issued a statement saying that what Li said was completely untrue. On February 5, 2009, the general manager of Tasly Group said that Li was not only an academician, but also the chief scientist of Chinese Medicine Co., Ltd., the largest manufacturer of compound Danshen tablets in China.

"Li is now the interest spokesperson of Compound Danshen Tablets, so he represents the interests of Baiyun Mountain." Wen Li said, "So he said that the purpose of this research is to suppress us."

In this regard, Li responded that his initial research was not to find fault with Tasly, but based on the chaotic situation of various compound Danshen preparations and manufacturers. And pointed out that the research data he used was picked from the books published by Tasly itself.

Since then, in Tasly's response, it has been constantly exposed that "Li asked for a research fee of 2 million yuan but failed to get revenge" and "the research result was taken out of context by stealing the concept". With the escalation of the incident, on the morning of February 5, 2009, Tasly's share price fell sharply against the market. In the afternoon, Tasly had to announce a temporary suspension of trading.

Tasly even said that they had started relevant judicial evidence collection, and they had to send Li to the judicial trial court. "Whether he is an academician or not, as long as he is not objective and unfair, we will take legal measures to safeguard our legitimate rights."
