65438+February 1 1, a paper introducing the technical breakthrough of lithium battery appeared on the cover of Science. As one of the leading figures in scientific journals, the level of this paper can be seen.

This paper was published by the Northwest Pacific National Laboratory of the U.S. Department of Energy. It mainly expounds that using single crystal material with high nickel content as the negative electrode of the battery can improve the capacity, safety and life of the battery at the same time.

As we all know, nickel is an important material of ternary lithium battery, but the nickel content in lithium battery will affect the stability of the battery at present. The birth of this new technology has given ternary lithium batteries a better prospect.

With the progress of the times, people's modes of travel are also developing, from the earliest reliance on legs and livestock as foot strength to coal-fired locomotives and fuel vehicles. Nowadays, there are more and more electric vehicles on the market, which tend to replace fuel vehicles.

However, the great recession of fuel vehicles did not come as soon as expected. What is limiting the development of electric vehicles?

The earliest electric vehicles used lead-acid batteries as energy sources, which were poor in stability and energy density and not environmentally friendly, and were quickly eliminated by the market.

Later, lithium iron phosphate batteries began to be popularized, and the stability and safety were greatly improved, but the energy density was still not high enough. This shortcoming led to the short cruising range of electric vehicles at that time, and the fast charging technology was not popularized, which limited the development of electric vehicles.

Nowadays, ternary lithium battery has already become the main energy source of electric vehicles, once occupying 70% market share.

The ternary lithium battery has a high energy density, which solves the problem of cruising range to some extent. Coupled with the rapid popularization of fast charging, it seems that solving battery life anxiety is close at hand.

However, with the frequent occurrence of spontaneous combustion accidents of electric vehicles in society, the shortcomings of ternary lithium batteries have been completely exposed to the public, that is, insufficient safety, poor stability and easy to catch fire.

This limits the development of electric vehicles on another level.

Now, science has brought us such good news, does it mean that electric vehicles can quickly replace gasoline vehicles, and the era of all-electric vehicles is coming?

It's not that simple. The changes brought about by the development of science and technology have never been achieved overnight, just as delicious fruits have a mature process from flowering to fruiting to being enjoyed by people.

Past experience tells us that it will take at least ten years for the cutting-edge technology to mature and be widely used in the whole society.

Therefore, the time node when electric vehicles completely replace fuel vehicles is not close at hand. Friends who have already bought a fuel car or are about to buy a fuel car don't worry. Your car will not be eliminated for a long time.

However, the world's major battery manufacturers, including contemporary Amperex Technology Co, Limited, have begun to deploy in Indonesia, the country with the highest nickel reserves in the world, and Volkswagen has also announced that it will realize full electrification in 2040, which shows that the era of electric vehicles is not far away.
