Joseph Charles Francis Rock's works
Joseph Charles Francis Rock is known as "the father of western Naxi studies". Since the 1920s, Locke has been studying Dongba rituals and Dongba scriptures in Yunnan, China for 27 years, and has published dozens of related works. Naxi Encyclopedia of English is his masterpiece, which is of great value in the history of Naxi and Dongba studies. The main research material of this paper is the Chinese version of the first volume of Naxi English Encyclopedia Dictionary translated by He Jiangyu in 2004, which was renamed by Guo Dalie and Limin School and published by Yunnan Education Press. This paper studies from four aspects: writing, phonetics, lexicology and comparison with other dictionaries. 1. sound. This paper compares the phonetic notation of the same word with Mike's Comparison Table of Locke Phonetic Alphabet and International Phonetic Alphabet, Fang Guoyu's Naxi Pictograph and Li Lincan's Momo Pictograph Dictionary, discusses Locke's phonetic system, and lists the phonetic comparison tables of three books. 2. Lexicology. We try to find out the style of Naxi English Encyclopedia Dictionary, and combine the theory of lexicography to explore the principles and methods of compiling Dongba vocabulary dictionary from the aspects of arrangement method, establishment and arrangement of word purpose, phonetic notation, interpretation and examples. 3. Text. We will identify the words and word groups in Naxi Encyclopedia of English with Yu Suisheng's Division Standard of Words and Word Groups, and count the number of Dongba words included in Naxi Encyclopedia of English. Then study words and groups separately. The study of single words uses the theory of "six books" to analyze its structure. The study of word groups includes the structure, semantic features and development direction of word groups. We also counted the number of goba words in English Naxi Encyclopedia, determined the total number of words in goba writing system, and studied the etymology of goba words. 4. Compare with other dictionaries. This paper compares the Dongba language collected in Naxi Encyclopedia of English, Naxi Pictograph Spectrum and Moguo Pictograph Dictionary from the aspects of homonyms and synonyms, and probes into the inter-word relationship of Dongba language.
