Boundary consciousness of "product thinking" Am I fit to be a product manager?
Engaged in product manager for 2 years, I have been thinking about a question: am I suitable to be a product manager? What kind of person is suitable to be a product manager?

The reason why I have been thinking about this problem is that in the process of communicating with people in language, I always feel that my communication ability is very weak, which is reflected in the usual product logic discussion, and I always don't think of good ideas and good ideas in time. There are roughly two reasons:

One is the lack of structured thinking ability;

Second, the product professional knowledge and ability are relatively lacking.

If not suitable for being a product manager, what kind of person is suitable for being a product manager?

Looking back on my recent experiences, I suddenly found something. ...

What is this?

Border consciousness

(PS: I didn't think of a more suitable word, so I used this instead for the time being. )

I will try to share my real thoughts with you, hoping to bring you some inspiration.

The first thing:

Before the specific launch, let me briefly introduce my mother: 53 years old, with a high school education, from an ordinary rural family, living by growing crops. But the two turning points in my life, both at home and outside, were basically caused by her personal accurate judgment and decision. At the same time, she is also one of the most optimistic people I have ever met.

In mid-September this year, I went back to my hometown because I got married and didn't have a job. The next night, I had a long talk with my mother at home for about 3 hours. During this period, I thought about why she was so optimistic when she was growing up. What is the reason? After some understanding and her confirmation, I think the general secret lies in this:

1. Know yourself and your relatives and friends. She belongs to the category with higher IQ among her peers in the same village. She is sincere and generous, so she is popular. In addition, she always takes the initiative to pay attention to relatives and friends, so she knows more about herself and the people around her, including family economy, ability and the relationship between relatives and friends.

Whenever she encounters any problem, she will think about how to solve it first, not complain. The solution is: can you solve the immediate problem with your current ability? If it can be solved, how should it be solved? Which method has the greatest success rate? After some consideration, there will naturally be a thoughtful solution to the problem I am facing. If you can't solve it by all means, that is, the problem is beyond her ability, then there is no point in suffering, so why bother?

These are the reasons why she can always face most problems optimistically.

The second thing:

Recently, I often exchange product logic with my product colleagues, and I always find that my thinking is limited. We can always find different but useful information from their perspective. As for how to judge whether it is useful or not, the key lies in whether his views are practical, closely related to the theme and rigorous in logic;

The third thing:

Recently, I presided over a review meeting on the requirements of information push and wake-up mechanism for new and old users. At the meeting, technical colleagues pointed out some unreasonable places and omitted some special logic, such as the user's state during the call, clicking into the live broadcast room and how to prompt the user. (PS: Two services in our product are: language chat and live voice broadcast)

The fourth thing:

I happened to read an article on the information platform last week. Everyone is a product manager. It is mentioned that when thinking about product requirements and combing product logic, the best answer can be found from the whole rather than the part.

Having said that, I will specifically talk about my views on some border awareness in the product field.

1. The boundary of Internet products

We know that Internet products are tools to meet the needs of their target users. So his boundary mainly lies in whether users have enough demand for the services and experiences you provide. The more users' needs are met, the greater the user value created. However, due to the objective existence of users' needs, and constantly changing with the development of science and technology and social economy, this fundamentally limits the boundaries of Internet products, that is, a product will have a life cycle, and it is impossible for a product to meet the needs of all users at the same time.

2. The boundaries of enterprises

Throughout the history of Internet development, most of the existing "makers" of Internet products are completed by enterprises, and very few are completed by individuals. The reason is that with the continuous development of technology, the decisive factor of a successful product (a product that can meet the business objectives and user needs and bring positive effects to society) can no longer be the only factor of a successful product. Because a successful product often needs the right time, the right enterprise, the right business model and so on. As a manufacturer of Internet products, it is only a necessary condition for the birth of a successful product. Therefore, the boundary of an enterprise lies in the extent to which you can provide services and experience products to help users meet their needs. In addition to the influence of policy and social factors, it mainly depends on the comprehensive strength of enterprises, including the technical strength and economic strength of the company. The technical strength of the company includes the decision-making ability of the boss, department manager and other decision-making levels, and the execution ability of the executive levels such as product department, technology department, operation department and marketing department.

3. The boundaries of product managers

It mainly depends on whether you have enough knowledge of product boundaries, including industry boundaries, technology boundaries, competing products boundaries, company boundaries, product business boundaries, product process boundaries, product function boundaries, product interaction boundaries, product visual boundaries and user cognitive boundaries. Generally speaking, it is whether you have enough understanding and clear cognition of the main related factors that affect the success of products. Therefore, systematic thinking ability is one of the core abilities of product managers.

For newcomers to the product, including product managers who are new to the industry or unfamiliar with the product, you can well see the strength of your systematic thinking ability through demand review and usual product logic communication, and the systematic thinking ability depends on your cognitive boundary. When you have a clear understanding of the boundaries of all aspects of the product, then when you discuss a new requirement, you will know whether this new requirement can be done. And clearly know: if you can do it, why can you do it? To what extent can it be done? What effect will it have on the existing functions? If not, why not?

Summary:

1. If you want to make an Internet product well, you need to master the system thinking ability;

2. If you want to exercise the thinking ability of the system, you need to have enough understanding of the product boundary;

3. If you want to have a good understanding of product boundaries, you need to have a good understanding of product business and product logic.
