The population of Zhang in the world exceeds 1 100 million, so Zhang is called "the largest surname in the world". In recent years, the upsurge of searching for roots and asking for ancestors has caused research and controversy in the historical and cultural circles about where the ancestral roots of Chinese surnamed Zhang are. There are three main opinions: Qinghe in Hebei, Puyang in Henan, Taiyuan in Shanxi or Yongji.
At the seminar held in Puyang, the representative of Hebei Qinghe Zhang Research Association submitted a paper entitled "Zhang's Chinese Roots in Qinghe, Hebei". However, Zhu Shaohou, a professor at Taiwan Province Provincial University and the president of Henan Historical Society, and other famous historians on both sides of the Taiwan Strait all believe that Zhang's statement about Zhang's ancestral home in Qinghe is not credible. Because this statement was first seen in Zhang's genealogy compiled by Puyang people such as Zhang Jun in Jiajing period of Ming Dynasty, there is no literature and historical data to prove this statement. The Yellow Emperor and his son Zhuan Xu are not here, and Zhang Hui is unlikely to live in this area. Puyang is not only the place where the ancient Qinghe River flows, but also the center of Zhuan Xu (Zhanghe), the capital of Xiangjian and the eastern capital. At the same time, the cultivation of mulberry trees and bamboos in Puyang in ancient times met the conditions that Zhang Hui invented bows and arrows and his tribe was good at making bows and arrows. China's first collection of poems, The Book of Songs, and the archaeological sites of Longshan culture and pre-Shang culture can prove this point. Therefore, Zhang's statement in Puyang is more credible. From the county's point of view, the Zhang family in Qinghe, Hebei Province is indeed the most prestigious and influential Zhang family.
