About generalist education?
In today's knowledge age, talents are the wealth of a country. University, the cradle of talents, has never been so important, and the value of university education has never been so high. In order to improve the level of running a university and promote the reform of university education, our school has discussed the orientation and thinking, tradition and characteristics of Shandong University. As an undergraduate, I focus on undergraduate education. Talent cultivation must first define a goal. Once the goal is determined, all measures can be formulated around this goal and serve this goal. What kind of training objectives should be set for talent training? In my opinion, we should aim at generalist education. General education is an education to improve students' quality in an all-round way, that is, to cultivate talents who are proficient in using written language, critical thinking ability and judgment and appreciation ability. They are not only knowledgeable, knowledgeable, but also broad-minded, and they are sure to achieve higher achievements in some fields in the future. Liang Qichao advocated generalist education and attached great importance to the education of his children. He believes that, first, professional education narrows people's knowledge. Second, narrow knowledge will not only lead to narrow-mindedness, but also make people's lives monotonous. Third, monotonous life may make people tired, and boredom is the root of degeneration. Mei Yiqi, president of Peking University, and Zhu Kezhen, president of Zhejiang University also hold this view. It is believed that generalist education can cultivate an independent personality of "thinking everything and saying everything", and specialist education can make people unable to think and can only be a tool of obedience and taming. I think that the "communication" in general education is manifested in specific teaching: first, the communication of arts and sciences. College science students should attach importance to the study of liberal arts. First, it is helpful to master the use of written language skillfully, but they can't form words and papers after their excellent academic performance, which others can't learn and communicate. Second, it helps to improve humanistic cultivation and strengthen the ability to judge and distinguish society. If liberal arts students know more about science, they can establish a scientific world outlook and cultivate rational thinking methods. Second, the communication of internal disciplines. Refers to the internal discipline under the liberal arts or science, and knowledge should be widely exchanged and connected. In liberal arts, law, politics, history, philosophy and other disciplines are closely related. Students who major in one of these subjects are bound to have more knowledge of other subjects in order to improve their understanding and thinking of this major. The same is true of the relationship between science. Third, theory and practice are closely linked. After all, everything in the books is dead in class, so remember, you may not need it. Some subjects of liberal arts and science are mostly used for practice, which requires students to have practical skills. Therefore, we should practice more and integrate theory with practice. Fourthly, it should be noted that general education is not "only broad but not deep", but deep digging in a certain field on the premise of broad, in order to achieve higher achievements. Width is the foundation of depth, and it is to prepare for depth. Shandong University, as a century-old prestigious school, has been striving to take general education as the goal and means of talent training, and to establish the educational idea of comprehensively improving the quality of talent training and cultivating the best undergraduate and first-class graduate students in China. With the aim of improving the quality of education and teaching, the school has strengthened the construction of teaching staff, improved teaching and experimental conditions, implemented the innovation of personnel training mechanism, and steadily improved the quality of teaching management, gradually forming the traditions and characteristics of our school-complete disciplines, cross-integration, knowledge of literature and history, and infiltration and radiation. In addition, there are a lot of new measures in undergraduate talent training, such as strengthening the "second campus experience" for students to exchange and study with other universities, and opening "summer schools" and so on. This is conducive to the formation of students' liberal arts, disciplines, theory and practice, all-round development and all-round improvement of their abilities. However, it is undeniable that our general education has not been fully exerted, and there is still much room for improvement and development. The concept of "no best, only better" makes our school look for shortcomings in all aspects, strive to improve itself, develop in a higher direction, and train more outstanding talents at a higher level. I think the general education at undergraduate level can be improved in the following aspects. First of all, let students generally establish a "sense of generalist". Some students are easy to relax and even feel idle when they enter the university stage, mainly because they lack spiritual strength, have no sense of responsibility and have no goal and orientation for the future. Schools have the responsibility to help students seek spiritual strength, find a good position and grasp the direction. Students have a sense of responsibility for the future of the country, and the motivation generated by ideological agitation will be transformed into action, forming a strong thirst for knowledge, always thinking that they still have a lot to learn and improve, and inspiring the desire to become a "generalist." Of course, there must be practical ways to help students establish "generalist consciousness", and if they fall into political emptiness and abstract preaching, they will not have good results. I also thought of the elective course system in our school, which is also implemented in many other universities. In Shanda University, every semester, all students in the school can choose any subject listed on the Internet, which is generally irrelevant to the major and is included in the final credits. Elective course system could have been an important part of general education and a relatively innovative part, but its design was unreasonable and failed to play its due role. First of all, there are few elective subjects listed in the school, and there are almost no key subjects in each major. In other words, most of the listed subjects focus on cultivating amateur interests, such as calligraphy and photography, and there are few key professional subjects. This does not conform to the common sense of general education. The school can offer Japanese and French as students' second foreign languages, and there are many or even all courses such as constitution, world history and finance for students to choose from. It may be because the elective courses are decided by the colleges, and the key courses in our college generally don't want students from other colleges to "disturb", but this can only be a self-contained system, and other students can't get in and their own students can't get out. At this time, it is necessary to mobilize schools and strengthen cooperation between hospitals. There is no need to be too obvious about the Chu-He Han boundary. Secondly, the number of doors should also be relaxed. Students should have autonomy, and it is advisable to choose one or three courses each semester. Finally, I think there should be some tests at the end of the term. Some students usually don't listen carefully in order to get credits. In order to play a supervisory role, an easy test can be set up at the end of the period, and it can be included in the scholarship evaluation according to the calculation standard of limited course selection in each college. Regarding the internship of students in our school, colleges with internship arrangements are generally arranged in the next semester of junior year. I think if the school has the conditions, there is no need to concentrate the internship in this period of time, and it is time to prepare for the postgraduate entrance examination next semester. It is best to practice in synchronization with learning, that is, take time out for practice after learning knowledge in one semester every winter and summer vacation. For example, Tsinghua Law School, as far as I know, has an internship base, and the internship is arranged on holidays. Of course, if the school has no conditions, don't force it. Our school has set up various double degrees, and it takes students about five years to complete both degrees, so that students can have better skills in two fields, which is another good way to cultivate generalists in recent years. It can be further liberalized in the future. For example, students can choose two degrees according to their hobbies and specialties. That is, in addition to the major that has been determined at the time of enrollment, choose another one that interests you. In addition, the number of people taking double degrees should be gradually increased, and there should be no restrictions in the future. There is also the "second campus experience" mentioned earlier. Every semester, the school sends students to NPC, CUHK, Xiamen University and other schools for exchanges, so that students are influenced by different cultural atmosphere. If the school has the conditions, it can slightly expand the scope of exchange schools and the number of exchange students, so as to make the exchange effect more remarkable. "Universities are not tall buildings, but masters." Universities are not only the gathering place of young talents, but also the gathering place of masters. High-level teachers play an important role in talent training. However, there seems to be a gap between students and teachers at the undergraduate level. Besides teaching in class, teachers don't have much time to contact with students. College students mainly rely on themselves in their professional study, but the effect is not ideal. Self-study is mainly guided by teachers, and more is the stimulation and driving role of teachers. In my opinion, schools can innovate in two aspects and give play to the important role of teachers. First, some academic forums and forums are hosted by teachers. Perhaps some colleges have such activities, but as far as I know, the number is small, and such activities are not popular in all colleges. In the forum or forum, teachers can give a speech on a certain issue and expound their personal views, and then students and teachers can discuss and even debate freely, thus stimulating students' interest in professional learning, sparking students' thinking, gradually cultivating the spirit of "thinking everything" and forming personal opinions and thoughts, which is very significant and important. Secondly, universities in both China and western countries tend to pay less attention to undergraduate education, which is related to teachers' putting more energy into scientific research, because scientific research ability has become another important task of universities besides talent training, and it is also the main criterion for evaluating university level. In my opinion, there is no contradiction between scientific research and education, and a balanced method can be found. At the undergraduate stage, teachers can start teaching students how to carry out preliminary scientific research methods and put some scientific research-related contents into their usual teaching. At the undergraduate stage, while laying a solid foundation, cultivating interest in academic research can prepare for the postgraduate stage. Even if students don't go to graduate school, learning to do research will be of great benefit to their future work. Therefore, I advocate the tutorial system at the undergraduate level. The undergraduate stage does not need to be like the graduate stage. A tutor can only take a few graduate students, and a tutor can take more than a dozen students in the undergraduate stage. Tutors regularly call everyone to talk with each other, give students an academic guidance and guidance role, and stimulate interest in academic research through exchanges. You don't need to meet frequently, just once every three weeks, so it won't take up too much time for tutors with master's or doctoral degrees at the same time. These are my thoughts on general education in my alma mater. With deep love and gratitude for her, I firmly believe that the rigorous and simple spirit of "endless learning" will be passed down from generation to generation, and will always maintain vitality and vitality, and rank among the first-class universities at home and abroad with a higher and stronger posture.
