How did I overcome procrastination and finish a 38,000-word graduate thesis in half a month?
Update:

At the end of the article, there are methodological cards extracted by Sven, Wu Xiaojing, Duan Yibang according to this article. If the article is too long, you can pull it directly to the bottom.

I don't know if you have this feeling:

Every time I die, I am anxious to die. I swear with my teeth that I will start early next time so that I can take my time, and then I will continue to wait until I die next time.

Anyway, that's how I write my thesis.

I had to write the opening report when I started my defense last year, and I didn't start writing it until there was one week left. As a result, I wrote desperately that week. After the defense, I communicated with my classmates and vowed to set a banner: I want to start writing the text of the paper as soon as possible, and I don't want to be in such a hurry anymore.

Well, as it turns out, FLAG will be hit in the face when it is established. Bang bang.

At the beginning of this year, I was stuck in a project that I really wanted to complete, but I couldn't. The whole 1 and February are in a state of losing energy and letting themselves go. Basically, I didn't do anything, so the paper naturally didn't start.

Fortunately, the savior appeared-the operation director of Happiness Evolution Society &; Li Xiuyan, the project director, was once the goddess of coldness in my eyes. In fact, she is very warm-hearted and enthusiastic in nature. Knowing that I was in a bad state, she was very concerned about me. Basically, every once in a while, she will ask me: Hey, how are you flying by yourself recently? I am ashamed to say, well, I am still flying.

She said it doesn't matter, everyone should relax, and I often let myself go. She also shared her experience of letting myself go, which made me feel much better.

Then I continued to fly by myself.

The time to release yourself always passes quickly. By March or so, I found that I couldn't go on like this.

Not because of the awakening of conscience, but because the teacher sent a notice that the paper will be handed in in early April soon.

At that time, my heart collapsed:

Talking about this matter in the chat, Yong Cheng suggested that I find someone with relevant experience, such as Dr. Tongji Ma. I decided to ask, but Dr. Ma's unintentional words gave me an evil thought: he asked me, do you want to write it yourself or XXX (you know)?

I'm really cautious, because the deadline is very close, and I don't want to move at all. It is not my conscience that dispels this idea, but poverty ... I found that an article needs 7k+ to start, and the quality is not necessarily guaranteed. Then I might as well change my mind and pretend to have received the 7K manuscript.

Then I continued to ask Dr. Ma and found that other people's papers were all experiments, which were completely different from our business subjects and had no reference significance. But Dr. Ma showed me a way: looking for Hiroki, who just graduated from MBA last year. That's right!

I quickly ran to ask Hiroki. Hiroki directly sent me a summary of his experience in writing a paper and asked me: When will you hand in your paper? I said, April 2nd. He looked at the time and said, you'd better postpone graduation next year.

I was kind in an instant. I don't want to postpone graduation. Sounds weak! This will definitely be a stain on my life! I need to save it again.

Based on the idea that I can't give up on myself, I went to talk to Comrade Tu Xiaowa who needs to write a paper.

Then I was surprised to find: Why is everyone so calm and confident, just because they haven't written a paper yet?

Come on, talk about her monthly promotion theme and learn illustration, which makes me envy.

I feel particularly in need of help and want to find this state.

At this time-there should be a spotlight here-Xiuyan's sister appeared like a god.

She said, why don't I consult you?

So we played for over an hour.

First of all, she analyzed that the task has two aspects, management and technology.

Management is a lack of understanding of the planning and importance of tasks, and technology is a lack of relevant technologies to promote tasks, such as not knowing the methods and processes of writing papers.

Then she began to ask from the management aspect, and directly used a few questions to dig the value behind what I did:

One problem after another, I suddenly found that the real reason behind not writing is that I don't have a very urgent idea, I feel dispensable, I don't have enough motivation, and there are many temptations outside. I still get up early to take thinking notes, fast and slow, and I have no idea how to write a paper.

My thoughts and actions are actually biased. I think writing a paper is very important, but I just think it is very important.

There are three reasons why the action can't go out: cognition, temptation and technology. Now that all three reasons have appeared at the same time, it is strange that I moved.

Now that all three reasons have been found, we can break it directly.

If it is really that important to me, I will finish it anyway.

I haven't finished it, just because I didn't pay so much attention to it, and I thought there was a way out even if I didn't finish it, so I didn't write it.

However, I don't want to bear the consequences of unfinished business, so I must face this matter squarely and solve it.

In the case of limited time and resources, you can temporarily give up learning activities such as reading and concentrate on surprise examination papers.

Sister Xiuyan said, we must remember that tools serve the goal. Just use the tools you have learned to serve the most important thing at the moment.

Learn to give up, learn to give up.

Find an excellent paper learning framework on related topics, and then modify, improve and fill your own framework.

The second of the four fastest learning methods: follow the master and learn while doing.

After analyzing these three questions, I suddenly became enlightened.

However, this is not enough. After all, there is no specific action plan.

Sister Xiuyan said, do things to the point. Writing a thesis is a project that can be used for other things you have learned.

For example, if she likes playing badminton at ordinary times, she will have the following purposes:

After listening, I knelt down. What kind of thinking is this? Playing badminton can earn so much. . . Me. .

Trembling, I was asked another question: If you want to finish writing 30,000 words before XX, and there are still two weeks, what are you going to do? Is it loose before and tight after? Tight front and loose back? Or egalitarianism? Decide according to your own schedule.

I thought about it and decided to write 15000 to 17000 in the first week and 13000 in the second week.

This is also a tight front and loose back, but the gap is not that big and psychologically acceptable.

But it's not over yet. After listing the goals, we should find the risks and make adjustments.

Think carefully, what risks will appear in the process of achieving this goal?

The risks I listed mainly include the following:

After listing, Sister Xiuyan instructed me to give the preventive strategies for each risk.

To achieve a goal, you must be able to explain it clearly in 3-4 steps.

For the thesis, my idea is to search for information, find arguments and fill in the content.

In this way, we know what the three most important things are: collecting information, writing papers and communicating with people.

Then, when making daily plans, we must be clear about the main line of the day and concentrate on doing one thing well, instead of doing one thing in the east and one thing in the west, and finally doing nothing well.

In addition to the above, Sister Xiuyan also suggested that I write a time expenditure record to see the discrepancy between what I actually did and the expected investment time, and then analyze the specific state and where the gap appeared.

She said, don't spell state, as long as you feel depressed, do something that makes you happy to adjust. It is not impossible to do happy things as a supplement, but it is necessary to be temperate.

Finally, give me motivation:

It's time to test your self-management ability! ! ! ! ! !

Think about finishing it! You're amazing! Finish the paper in two weeks! And methodology!

Yes, and then I started swishing.

In this way, I started my thesis promotion journey.

The first step is to paste the literature summary and background in the opening report, so that you can have seven or eight thousand words at once and get the first award-winning experience. I feel very happy to start so many at once.

The second step is to continue to advance. I find that writing about 3000 words a day is a goal beyond my comfort zone, but I can try to achieve it, so I give myself a task, and I must finish 3000 words a day anyway.

If I don't write this amount, I will write even if I stay up late. I must force myself to finish it.

The third step is to continuously optimize the summary. According to the record of time expenditure, I found that as long as I am immersed and focused, I am very efficient and write very fast, but sometimes when chatting with others, I write very slowly and can't do it at all. In this way, when writing a paper, you will try to eliminate external interference.

The fourth step is to ask for family support. These two weeks, holidays and weekends, I communicated with my family and asked them to help me take care of my baby. I spend time writing my thesis. Fortunately, my parents and teammates on both sides supported me, so that I could better devote myself to the paper.

Two weeks later, the first draft of my thesis was successfully completed, with 38,000 words. The subsequent modification process will not be described in detail.

In the process of popularizing this article, the three most important gains are:

Xiu's consultation is very important. She helped me to establish a feeling:

I know what I want and how to get it. I know that as long as I do one thing well every time, I can 100% achieve my goal. This is a very valuable sense of control.

Moreover, this sense of control is not an armchair strategist, but can be extracted and moved to other goals.

On the way to achieve your goal, all the glamorous things that look beautiful are actually temptations and traps, which attract you to deviate from your own path and thus reduce your efficiency.

In the process of writing my thesis, I temporarily gave up my study accumulation such as morning reading and concentrated on the thesis assault. Of course, this time, because time is pressing, it has to be like this.

In the process of pursuing long-term goals, it is impossible to abandon everything else, but we must make overall plans, but we must not blindly do more and make good choices.

When you are afraid of difficulties, you must break down seemingly difficult tasks into small tasks, and then you should complete the first step and gain the experience of winning for the first time. The hardest part is actually in the beginning

As long as you complete the first step and have the follow-up ideas, it will be much easier to move on, and you will not be held back because you are afraid of difficulties, but the sense of accomplishment and motivation to complete the first step will also inspire you to move forward.

Thanks to Sister Xiuyan for her consultation, her family's support during the process, and all the people mentioned in the article (without repeating the roll call). During the completion of the thesis project, my energy state gradually picked up, and other things began to advance in an orderly way. So, when you are very sad and have no energy, do something to get yourself moving.

I accidentally wrote 3800 words and will reply next week. Wish me luck:)
