Does watching American TV plays have any effect on improving English?
Personally, I think watching American TV plays an auxiliary role in improving English, but we can't all expect to learn English by watching American TV plays.

These are my two arguments, and I will demonstrate them separately below. First of all, why do I say it has a supporting role, such as myself. During the postgraduate entrance examination, when I am particularly tired of studying, I will watch some American dramas to relax, such as The Big Bang Theory and Friends. The English of this kind of American drama is very authentic, and the translation is exquisite and wonderful. This will definitely increase your sense of language, and you can also review some new words with Chinese and English subtitles. However, you must choose the right movie. For example, if you prepare for CET-6 and practice listening in language, I won't recommend American dramas, but English dramas, because CET-6 listening is British pronunciation, and there is still a big difference between them. Moreover, since I emphasize the auxiliary function, that is to say, if you don't memorize words, you don't learn English grammar. Therefore, it is useless to watch too many American dramas.

Learn everything in a down-to-earth way. The stupidest way is the fastest and most effective way. Don't always feel that you are learning well, the key is whether you have really studied. When you memorize words, understand grammar, analyze hundreds of English articles with long and difficult sentences by yourself, and then watch American TV series, you will unconsciously applaud their translation and feel that you can do it one day!
