Baynard, editor-in-chief of Nouvelliste, a monthly literary magazine in St. Petersburg, selected twelve poems with Russian characteristics from Russian poets, and prepared to publish one in each issue of the newly-established music supplement of 1876, as well as a piano piece consistent with the contents of the poems. So he asked Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky for a manuscript, and sent the selected poems to Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky, asking him to write a piano song according to this festival every month and publish it at the same time.
