Jude calmed down and struggled again. He came to work as a stonemason near the Christian Temple, enjoying the academic atmosphere and classical architectural style here, and ignored menstruation's warning to see his cousin Shu, who was also in the Christian Temple. Jude began to be attracted by her cheerful and rebellious personality and had more and more contacts. Jude and Sue went to see Jude's teacher, Filote Sang, and found that Filote Sang had lost his ideal and was still teaching in a primary school. Jude recommended Sue as his teaching assistant. But soon, Filote Sang fell in love with Sue, and Jude saw their affair together, which was very painful, but limited to his married status, he could not interfere. He lost his emotional sustenance and hoped to make some achievements in his studies, so he wrote to the deans of many colleges, hoping to enter the school. The only reply said, "According to your husband, you are a worker. In this case, I think I should stick to my old job and be content with my duty, instead of aiming too high and finding another way. " Deeply hit, he began to drink again, was soon fired and had to return to Marigelin. Under the guidance of an assistant pastor, he decided to become a "preacher without pastor qualification" and did something useful for others, and finally became a pastor at the age of 30.
Jude received a letter from Shu from Melchester (Salzbury) Teachers College, pouring out her loneliness and pain, and Jude hurried to pick her up. Jude was very upset when he learned that Shu would marry Filote Sang two years later, but he still found a job in the local area to repair the cathedral (Shu thought that the cathedral was out of date and the railway station was downtown). After work, he continued to read theological works or went out with Shu. Shu was severely punished by the school for coming home late from a trip with Jude. She escaped from school and waded across the biggest river in the area to meet Jude. Shu's anti-unification view and intense lack of gentleness made Jude feel lovely and at a loss. Filote Sang now teaches in a primary school in Shastow. He investigates local historical sites in his spare time. This new hobby made him feel calm, but the news that Shu ran away from the normal school broke his calm. When Filote Sang arrived in Melchester, he met Jude who worked in the cathedral. Jude directly expressed his love for Shu. Soon, Jude received a letter from Shu, saying that she was getting married and wanted Jude to be her best man. Jude attended Shu's wedding with great pain, then went back to the Christian temple to look for a job, but met Arabina who came back from Australia. After spending the night with Jude, Arabina told Jude that she was married again in Australia. Jude began to realize that Arabina's sensual impulse and Shu's mental pain affected his struggle.
On the other hand, she was troubled by her relationship with Filote Sang. She said, "I found that I can't give love to the person who continues to live in my room-even though this person has been approved by the bishop to accept this love." Jude's aunt died. At the funeral, Jude and Shu realized that they could not be separated. When they parted, Shu kissed Jude, who thought the kiss was a turning point and he could no longer be a devout missionary. Fellotsang and Shu couldn't understand each other, and their relationship deteriorated. After thinking hard, Ferrot Sang decided to give up his separation and divorce her. His actions liberated Shu, but ruined his future. The local society strongly opposes Filote Sang's behavior. Shu and Jude arrived in Alderbrikheim (the prototype is Reading), and Arabina and Jude's divorce lawsuit was also solved. Two free men began to think about getting married, but Shu hesitated, because she didn't like to stipulate her feelings by contract. The two lovers lived a happy life, but soon the local people knew their situation and became hostile to them, so they had to move on, especially after they had children. Jude's ambition is not rewarded, and there is no way to find a job or get a loan. In despair, his eldest son (who gave birth to Arabina) hanged himself with his weak sister and brother. Suffering from this great change, Shu couldn't bear the blow and attributed it all to God's punishment for her and Jude's crimes. She finally gave in to fate and the church, left Jude and returned to Filote San. Jude, who lost his true love, drank all day, reunited with Arabina in a trance, became depressed, and died of hatred before he was thirty. Before Jude died, Arabina was still outside, dating someone new.
