Why do you say to study in the countryside first?
Regarding going to the countryside again, it is necessary to break the personal gap between the past and the present. In my last article "Rural Writing", I talked about the occurrence of people writing in a situation that is blocked by space and time in the process of expressing their feelings. But in that article, I only said something about the space barrier. Rural society is a face-to-face society. If you have something to say, you can make it clear to your face without resorting to words. This meaning is easy to understand, but what about the time barrier? In this article, I want to quote this meaning. The so-called time barrier has two aspects, one is the personal gap between the past and the present, and the other is the social gap between generations. Let me talk about the former aspect first. The difference between man's life and other animals lies in his learning ability. His behavior is not stubbornly dominated by physiological reactions that he can learn without learning. The so-called learning is the process of transforming the instinctive way with a set of artificial behavior patterns after birth. The way to learn is to learn. Learning refers to doing it repeatedly, and getting a person used to a new practice through timely tempering. Therefore, learning must break the personal gap between the past and the present. This depends on a particularly developed ability of our human beings, a bridge between time and memory. In the learning process of animals, we can also say that they have memories, but their memories are at a simple physiological level. A mouse learned a shortcut in the maze. What it learns is a series of new physiological reactions. Unlike human learning, they don't depend on the symbol system. Although man has many habits, he is essentially like a mouse walking a maze, but he often has a symbol system to help him. The so-called symbol system, the most important thing is the word. We are constantly learning and talking, abstracting concrete situations into a set of universally applicable concepts, which must be expressed in language, so we rely on language to make us move from special to universal and build a bridge in individual situations. It also enables us to move from the present to the future and build a bridge in an instant. From this point of view, the relationship between an animal and time can be said to be a straight line, while the relationship between man and time depends on concepts, that is, words, but it is more complicated than a straight line. He has the ability to close his eyes and stay in the past situation. The present of human beings contains the outstanding projection of the past, and the choice of time is cumulative.
