Diethylzinc is a colorless, transparent and odorous liquid at normal temperature and pressure. In the air, it can naturally produce zinc oxide white smoke when burning. It reacts violently with water and decomposes into flammable ethane gas to catch fire. Soluble in saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons such as hexane and heptane and aromatic hydrocarbons such as toluene and xylene. It forms unstable complexes with AsH3, PH3, linear ethers and thioethers, but forms stable complexes with tertiary amines and cyclic ethers. It reacts violently with alcohols and acids with active hydrogen. When air is introduced into the petroleum ether solution of diethyl zinc, the peroxide C2H5OOC2H5 is generated. When ammonia gas is dried in ether solution, zinc amine Zn(NH2) is formed.
5. Toxicity and safety protection
Maximum allowable concentration: 50mg/m3.
See dimethyl zinc.
