Poisonous moth family; Grass moth, LEPIDOPTERA 1 family. Medium-sized moth with undeveloped beak, no eye, four copper veins on the front wing, poisonous hairs on the larvae and inverted glands. Undergraduate insects are generally called poisonous moths. It is an important pest in agriculture, forestry and animal husbandry. About 2700 species are known in the world, and about 360 species in China. Most species in China are distributed in the south of the Yangtze River, with the most species in southwest and south China and less in northwest China.

Adults (moths) are medium to large. The body is thick and hairy, and the female moth has anal tufts at the ventral end. Mouth degeneration, lower lip must be very small. No one eye. Antennas have double comb teeth, and the comb teeth of male moths are longer than those of female moths. There is a tympanic membrane device. Wings are well developed, and most species are covered with scales and fine hairs. In some species, such as ancient poisonous moths and grass poisonous moths, the wings of female moths degenerate or leave only traces or no wings at all. The size and color of adults (moths) often vary significantly with gender. Adult (moth) activities are mostly at dusk and night, and a few are during the day.

At rest, the hairy front legs protrude forward. The body of the larva is covered with different lengths of hair, forming hair bundles or brushes on the tumor. Larvae has poisonous hair, hence the name. It is an important distinguishing feature of undergraduate larvae that the glands in the 6 th and 7 th abdominal segments or only the 7 th abdominal segment have inversion. Young larvae have the habit of clustering and spinning.

Pupa is a pupa, its body surface is covered with hair bundles, and its body surface is smooth or has small holes, nodules and buttock thorns. Mature larvae use silk or silk, leaves and larval body hair to wind into cocoons in the litter on the surface or in the gaps of bark, and pupate in the cocoons. Eggs are mostly laid on bark, branches and leaves, forest ground cover or the back of female moth cocoon. The egg pile is often covered with the secretion of the female moth or the hair at the end of her abdomen.

The feeding habits of poisonous moths are very diverse, and larvae are easy to change host plants. Eat more plants and sometimes prey on aphids and scale insects on host plants. The main hosts are temperate plants such as Moraceae, Lauraceae, Euphorbiaceae, Leguminosae, Fagaceae, Caprifoliaceae, Meliaceae, Rosaceae, betulaceae, Myrtaceae, etc.

Moths harm many kinds of agricultural and forestry crops. In areas where poisonous moths occur, human contact with poisonous hairs and venom can cause dermatitis, ophthalmia and upper respiratory tract inflammation; In pastoral areas and sericulture areas, livestock and silkworms eat feed containing poisonous moth larvae by mistake, which can also cause poisoning and even death.

But some moth larvae can prey on aphids and scale insects on host plants, which is beneficial to human beings.

The important economic categories of the undergraduate course are: gypsy moth, moth, yellow moth, tea moth, pine caterpillar, thief moth, snow moth and Yang Xue moth.
