Deng Shichang was one of the earliest naval officers in China, and he was the captain of beiyang fleet Zhiyuan Ship in Qing Dynasty. During his imprisonment, Yuan rulers tortured him in every way, using both soft and hard methods, in an attempt to force him to surrender and cooperate with Yuan people. However, Wen Tianxiang refused to bow his head, and died heroically on December 9th, 19th year of Zhiyuan, thus maintaining national integrity, so he was called a national hero.
