What are the ceramic matrix composites?
Ceramic-based composites are composites with ceramics as matrix and various fibers added. The ceramic matrix can be high-temperature structural ceramics, such as silicon nitride and silicon carbide. These advanced ceramics have excellent properties, such as high temperature resistance, high strength and stiffness, relatively light weight and corrosion resistance. But their achilles heel is brittleness. When they are under stress, they will crack or even break, leading to material failure. It is an effective method to improve the toughness and reliability of ceramics by compounding high strength and high elasticity fibers with matrix. Fiber can prevent crack propagation, thus obtaining fiber reinforced ceramic matrix composites with excellent toughness.

Composite materials: the matrix materials of composite materials are divided into two categories: metal and nonmetal. Commonly used metal substrates are aluminum, magnesium, copper, titanium and their alloys. Non-metallic matrix mainly includes synthetic resin, rubber, ceramics, graphite, carbon and so on. The reinforcing materials mainly include glass fiber, carbon fiber, boron fiber, aramid fiber, silicon carbide fiber, asbestos fiber, whisker, metal wire and hard particles.

Ceramic matrix composite is a kind of high-performance composite material formed by implanting high-temperature resistant fibers into ceramic matrix. Because of its high strength and toughness, especially the failure-free fracture mode different from ordinary ceramics, it has attracted great attention from all countries in the world. Continuous fiber reinforced ceramic matrix composites have been widely used in aerospace, national defense and other fields.

I hope this helps.
