With the increasing activity of China in international economic activities and the urgent need of its own development, business English has increasingly become one of the hot majors in colleges and universities. Business English majors cultivate compound talents with solid English foundation and professional knowledge of foreign trade. Therefore, the teaching of business English should not only consider the teaching of English knowledge, but also pay attention to the improvement of English ability. Like general English, reading is also an important activity in the use of business English language. Through reading, students can master relevant reading skills, thus improving reading speed and language ability. At the same time, it can also cultivate students' practical ability to contact business knowledge and be familiar with business operation processes. Therefore, this paper discusses the teaching of business English, communicating with business colleagues, promoting and improving each other.
Generally speaking, business English teaching should cover language learning and business knowledge, and it is a comprehensive teaching that integrates language theory, business theory and business practice. Therefore, teachers should combine the teaching materials used, flexibly use teaching methods, pay attention to active classroom atmosphere in teaching activities, and let students learn knowledge in a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere. The most important thing is to improve students' practical ability to use language and communicate. For the teaching of this course, the author summarizes the following teaching suggestions based on years of relevant teaching experience:
First, basic vocabulary is the basis of business English, and expanding vocabulary learning on this basis is the basis of reading related business English. We can remember and master new words by associating them with known words. Of course, reading articles is also a good way to learn new words, and association is better. Here is an example.
What does the word confirm mean when it is used as a verb in common English? Confirm, confirm? , such as:
His guilty expression confirmed my suspicion. His guilty expression confirmed my suspicion. )
In business English, confirm should be translated into? Confirmed letter of credit? That is, a bank letter of credit opened by one bank and guaranteed by another. The following sentence:
● Payment will be made by 100% confirmed and irrevocable letter of credit at sight. Payment will be made by 100% at sight, confirmed and irrevocable letter of credit. )
Then, after reading the passage again, the teacher can mark the words that need to be explained first, and let the students say their meanings in general English; Then, explain the meaning expressed in business English; Finally, let students think and practice these? Commercial significance? Pay attention to the understanding and familiarity in the sentence, and then in the whole article.
Second, after you have a certain business English vocabulary, you should train it in chapters in order to further consolidate the new ideas you have learned (the meaning of vocabulary in business English). At this stage, it is best to choose some useful English reading materials to acquire both language knowledge and business knowledge in real business scenes. Read two sentences in the article:
If you place regular orders, you can get a 5% discount.
If the seller provides credit for the time draft, they have made trade acceptance. The seller can ask the bank to finance the transaction by purchasing a draft. It is said that the bank discounted this draft.
Let students understand the word discount deeply by deepening consolidation exercises.
The next step is to expand knowledge through dialogue or discourse. For example, the following dialogue about product introduction:
These are our new models.
What are their advantages?
A: They have many advantages. First of all, they are more durable than any similar products on the market.
B: Why does it take longer to wear than others?
A: The yarns of this fabric are carefully selected and woven very tightly.
B: Can you leave these samples with us?
A: How long do you want to keep it?
B: About three days.
● A: It doesn't matter.
At this point, guide the students to grasp the whole, that is: Why do you say this in this context, paving the way for the next step of differences between China and the West. And we can consider adding some classroom dialogue exercises after this stage of study to stimulate students' desire to use and increase the real context.
Third, in the teaching of business English, we must pay attention to the introduction of business etiquette, especially the differences between Chinese and western business etiquette or habits, so as to avoid unnecessary troubles caused by cross-cultural differences in future practical applications. For example, in China, to show politeness, people who are praised or praised always say? Where is it? Where is it? Waiting for a refusal to reply; However, westerners generally accept it happily and often express their gratitude. Thank you very much, because they think it is extremely impolite to refuse. For another example, in business negotiations, China people like to express their views tactfully and humbly; Westerners usually come straight to the point and get to the point. So in the usual teaching, we must point out such cultural differences. On the one hand, it answers students' incomprehension of the background of some business English articles, on the other hand, it also improves students' interest in learning and thirst for knowledge, which is full of curiosity and inquiry.
In short, in classroom teaching, we should not only pay attention to the basic knowledge of English, but also pay attention to the reserve of professional knowledge, and also pay attention to the accumulation of English skills and related business knowledge. However, these are not isolated, but interrelated and interpenetrating. It can be said that if something goes wrong in one aspect, it will affect the learning and improvement in other aspects. Therefore, we should give guidance from many angles and aspects in daily teaching, and also ask teachers to study more and update their knowledge to meet the needs of students and improve themselves.
