Relying on Wuhan University, the State Key Laboratory of Surveying and Mapping Remote Sensing Information Engineering is the only State Key Laboratory of Surveying and Mapping in China. At the beginning of 1989, the preparatory work was started on the basis of related laboratories of national key disciplines such as photogrammetry, remote sensing and geodesy of Wuhan Surveying and Mapping University, and it was officially approved by the State Planning Commission that year. 199 1 World Bank loan started, becoming one of the seven tracking demonstration laboratories of the World Bank in China. 1992 the state bureau of surveying and mapping invested in the open research fund, and the laboratory was officially opened to the outside world; 1995 passed the joint acceptance organized by the State Education Commission, the State Planning Commission and the State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping; 1996 ranked fifth in the state key laboratory of the Ministry of Geology 14 in the evaluation organized by the National Natural Science Foundation of China; In 2000, he participated in the evaluation organized by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, ranking fourth among 28 national key laboratories and open laboratories of the Ministry of Geology, and was rated as an excellent national key laboratory; In 2004, our laboratory was awarded the title of advanced collective and won the "Golden Bull Award" at the summary and commendation meeting of the 20th anniversary of the construction of the State Key Laboratory held by the Ministry of Science and Technology and other ministries. In 2005, it was once again rated as an excellent laboratory by the National Natural Science Foundation of China.

The director of the laboratory is Academician Gong Jianya. The director of the Academic Committee of the Laboratory is Academician Li Deren.

There are 97 permanent staff in the laboratory, including 86 researchers. Among the researchers, there are 7 academicians; 57 professors and 25 associate professors; There are 67 doctors and 46 young and middle-aged scientific and technological personnel under the age of 45. Today's research laboratories include: space photogrammetry, remote sensing image information processing, spatial information system, precise spatial positioning, 3S integration and spatial information service, multimedia communication, ocean monitoring and digital engineering research center, etc.
