Standard deviation is an objective index to evaluate the degree of sample dispersion. Theoretically speaking, the misjudgment of the standard is the reliability of sampling, but to what extent it can actually be achieved, the statistical community still lacks a completely unified view.
In 99% of papers, what readers need to know is: the degree of dispersion of samples, so unless you have a reason to describe sampling reliability rather than sample characteristics, you should use standard deviation.
