The influence of puritanism on American literature

Puritanism is Puritanism and its teachings. Puritans were reformists in the English church in the mid-16th century. Its radicals advocate republicanism and insist on the separation of church and state. Because the interests of the petty bourgeoisie they represent are persecuted by the government, they have to emigrate and seek religious freedom. 1620 The original settlers set out from the European continent by boat and began the mixing of colonial pioneers in New England.

Hard work and success began to convince new world settlers of the relationship between personal hard work and success. They are soberly aware that honesty and hard work style are essential qualities for a purposeful entrepreneur. Moreover, according to the Puritan doctrine, although God has decided his voters, it is unknown who the voters are, so everyone wants to succeed through personal struggle to prove who may be the lamb of God. It can be seen that the emphasis on the individual has prompted the individualism in American personality to sprout, and led to the formation of the so-called "American Dream", which has inspired generations of young people and played a very important role in the development of the United States of America.

The influence of Puritanism on American culture is more important in the infiltration of early American literature. The early colonial American literature had a certain purpose and puritan religious enthusiasm. Colonists either recorded farming, or described immigrant life, or conducted religious thoughts and discussions, described new mainland life and preached Puritanism. The worship and absolute trust of God in this early colonial American literature is strongly religious.

Enthusiasm for religion will inevitably lead to blind suppression of human nature and freedom of thought. On the outstanding performance of problems in legendary romantic literature. Writers deeply influenced by Puritanism not only reflect the Protestant outlook on life, but also criticize Puritanism's suppression of human nature.

Then in fact, the American Renaissance has already begun, that is, the first American literary activity-Transcendentalism. Transcendentalism emphasizes intuition, thinking that people can perceive the external world through perception and intuition and live in harmony with God and nature. Emphasize individualism, think that people are the most important element, and the ideal state is independent. Transcendentalism apparently abandons religious factors, but in fact it retains the remarkable characteristics of Puritanism: chastity; Harmony and unity of God, man and nature; God is everywhere; A thrifty attitude towards life. Therefore, transcendentalism, as a moral guidance in essence, tends to the best side of human nature, believes in personal dignity and value, and calls on people to abandon old customs and traditions and create a new American literature of their own.

The rule of Puritanism in New England has long been history, but its influence still exists. Americans have a high degree of individualism, advocating individuality, emphasizing personal struggle and success, and advocating pragmatic style. This character can be traced back to the initial success of Puritanism's settlement and development and Puritanism's idea of working hard and trying to redeem themselves. The influence of Puritanism can be seen in the early American literature, whether it is the literature of colonialism and early religious fanaticism, the narrative of Puritanism sin and concept in legendary romantic literature, or the strengthening of harmony between man and nature and the pure concern for morality in transcendental literature. Since then, regardless of realism, naturalism, the lost generation, or contemporary American literature, the preference for outsiders who care about their personal destiny and lonely heroes is different from that of other countries' literature. This stubborn American characteristic of personality and avoiding the theme is still related to Puritanism-the first Puritans immigrated to the United States just to escape religious persecution. Thus, for the United States of America, Puritanism is not only a doctrine, but also a cultural atmosphere, and American and American literature have a deep-rooted influence on personality. In a sense, the American people and American Puritan literature have their own characteristics.
