What factors are related to the gloss of coatings?

Glossmeter is used to detect the surface gloss of objects, mainly used for the gloss of paint, paint, ink and other coating surfaces. So what factors mainly affect the gloss of coatings? Is it better to know the influencing factors before controlling the gloss of coatings? The answer is yes. As the main factor of aesthetic appearance of objects, the surface gloss of coatings has been paid more and more attention in this era of pursuing aesthetics. The main factors affecting the gloss of the coating are:

1, curing agent dosage. When mixing paint, the gloss is improved by adding curing agent; When the curing agent decreases, the gloss decreases.

2. The amount of diluent. Increasing the amount of diluent can improve the leveling performance of coatings and reduce the gloss. Reduce the amount of thinner, paint leveling is good, and gloss is improved.

3. Particle size of pigments and fillers. Pigments and fillers have large particle size and extinction effect, so the gloss is not high. If the particles are too fine and the oil absorption is too large, the gloss will also decrease.

4. Dispersant. Different paints must be equipped with corresponding dispersants, and the wrong dispersant will affect the gloss of the paint. If the dispersant is not suitable, the pigment will flocculate, the particles will become coarse and the luster will be affected.

These are the four main factors that affect the gloss of the coating, and of course there are other factors.

The first is resin. Different types of resins have different glossiness. For example, the gloss of UPE and UV systems is very high, while the gloss of low hydroxyl acrylic resin is relatively poor. However, the gloss of the same resin is actually different, and it needs to be tested before a specific conclusion can be drawn.

Secondly, the influence of solvent. If the solvent volatilizes too fast or too slowly, it will affect the smoothness of the paint film and then reduce the gloss of the paint film; If the leveling property is good and a smooth, flat and uniform paint film can be formed, the gloss is high.

Then the color of the pigment and the oil absorption. Each color absorbs and reflects light to different degrees. Black absorbs more light, while white is reflective, so white has higher gloss. The greater the oil absorption of pigment, the worse the gloss.

As for the influence of smoothness and roughness of paint film, it is relatively simple. The main reason is the optical principle. The smoother the paint film, the stronger the reflection and the worse it is.

Generally speaking, there are many factors that affect gloss, from all aspects. If you want high gloss, you must improve it from the above aspects. As long as all the influencing factors are adjusted, you can get a very high gloss. If the gloss is not enough, you can use the exclusion method to examine one factor at a time.
