The treatment of dysmenorrhea by traditional Chinese medicine was dialectical at first. The cause of dysmenorrhea is poor circulation of qi and blood or deficiency of qi and blood. Common clinical symptoms include qi stagnation and blood stasis, cold coagulation and blood stasis, damp-heat stasis, qi and blood weakness and so on. 1. Commonly used Chinese medicines for qi stagnation and blood stasis: Rhizoma Cyperi, Linderae, Fructus Aurantii, Radix Angelicae Sinensis, Rhizoma Chuanxiong, Semen Persicae, Carthami Flos, Radix Paeoniae Rubra, Rhizoma Corydalis, Oletum Trogopterori, Cortex Moutan and Radix Glycyrrhizae. 2. Cold coagulation and blood stasis: cinnamon, dried ginger, fennel, angelica, chuanxiong, red spoon, trogopterori, cattail pollen, myrrh, corydalis tuber. 3. Damp-heat stagnation: Rhizoma Coptidis, Cortex Moutan, Radix Rehmanniae, Radix Paeoniae Alba, Radix Angelicae Sinensis, Rhizoma Chuanxiong, Semen Persicae, Carthami Flos, Rhizoma Corydalis, Rhizoma Curcumae and Rhizoma Cyperi. 4. Deficiency of both qi and blood: Ginseng, Radix Astragali, Radix Rehmanniae Preparata, Radix Paeoniae Alba, Radix Angelicae Sinensis, and Rhizoma Chuanxiong.
