In the preface, Lu Ji specifically expounded the purpose of writing this book, and also raised a specific problem in literary criticism, that is, "often suffering does not mean things, and the text fails to understand the meaning", so he wrote this monograph "describing the prosperity of predecessors because of the interests of composition". In this paper, Lu Ji divides literary creation into preparation stage, conception stage and specific creation stage to discuss the essence of literature.
In the preparation stage of creation, pay attention to the influence of the author's cultivation and natural social life on creation; In the conception stage, the imaginative function of "focusing on octupole and traveling in Wan Ren" was put forward, and visualization was also emphasized in literary creation, that is, "although you leave the party, you must avoid circles and become poor and complete the phase"; In the creative stage, it advocates that literary works should pay attention to both content and form, and advocates the so-called "unity of literature and quality" theory of "cultivating quality by reason, establishing things by reason and complicating things by reason". "Wen Fu" also specifically mentioned the problem of inspiration in creation.
Wen Fu occupies an important position in the history of China's literary theory. In the Qing Dynasty, Zhang Xuecheng thought that "Liu Xie was born in the family, Lu Ji said, but he was long-term literate" had a great influence on later generations.
