Code of hammurabi consists of three parts: preface, text and conclusion. The preface and conclusion account for about one-fifth of the total length. It is rich in language and rhetoric, full of words that deify and beautify Hammurabi. This is a hymn to the king. The text includes 282 laws, which make detailed provisions on criminal, civil, trade, marriage, inheritance and trial systems.

Some principles established in code of hammurabi, such as the legal principle that stealing other people's property must be punished, the legal principle that damage to other people's property should be compensated, the punishment principle of the crime of false accusation and frame-up, and the principle that judges seriously bend the law, have had a great influence on later legislation.

Code of hammurabi was not only applied by later countries in ancient Asia, such as Hittite, Assyria and New Babylon, but also had a certain influence on western legal culture through Hebrew law.

In the medieval Catholic Church Law, some legislative ideas and principles originated from this code.
