1980, under the guidance of Zhang Litong's scientific research theory, the first batch of high-precision, low-roughness, low-pressure first-class hollow guide vanes were successfully cast by using the soil shell material in Shangdian, Tongchuan for the first time in China. The dimensional accuracy and internal quality of newly cast blades are comparable to those of internationally renowned Rolls-Royce Engine Company, and the surface roughness is slightly lower than that of British blades. The introduction of Spey engine has brought Zhang Litong's research into a new stage in line with the international advanced ranks.
The investment casting technology without allowance studied by Zhang Litong not only pushes the investment casting level of China to the international advanced ranks, but also lays a theoretical and technical foundation for the development of complex inner cavity blades and thin-walled complex integral components of the new China engine. The soil shell resources in Shangdian, Tongchuan are also officially named as "China Kaolin Shell Resources".
In 2000 and 2008, the National Defense Key Laboratory of Ultra-high Temperature Structural Composites and the Ceramic Matrix Composites Engineering Center were established one after another, which set up a platform for the research and engineering transformation of ceramic matrix composites in China. Engineering achievements are widely used in the aerospace field and extended to the civil field. Zhang Litong co-authored two monographs, authorized more than 50 national invention patents, and published more than 400 papers included in SCI and EI.
