Comrade Kong Liuan is mainly engaged in the teaching and scientific research of management and safety engineering. He presided over and participated in the completion of 8 national key scientific and technological projects during the Tenth Five-Year Plan period, such as research and demonstration of gas geological methods and supporting technologies for predicting coal and gas outburst areas, key scientific and technological projects in Henan Province, research on identification and evaluation technology of major hazard sources (explosion and fire) in mines, and research on safety production and safety investment of coal enterprises in Henan Province. In Journal of Coal, China Safety Science Journal, Journal of Coal Science and Engineering [China] and other journals, nearly 30 academic papers were published, including Analysis of Influencing Factors of Coal Mine Safety in China, Grey Correlation Analysis of Economic and Social Development Indicators and Influencing Safety Production, and Analysis of Coal Mine Safety Production in Henan Province, among which 4 were EI 10. He has published 4 monographs such as Causes and Control of Man-Machine-Environment in Mine Transportation Accidents, Safety Analysis of Hydraulic Support Design and Use, and 3 university textbooks such as Modern Enterprise Management (Revised Edition).

In 2005, he won the Top Ten Scientific and Technological Achievements Award of China's coal industry 1, and in 2006, he won the second prize of Henan Science and Technology Progress Award 1, and two first prizes of departments (bureaus). In 2007, he was rated as one of the top ten management talents in Henan Province and the academic and technical leader of Henan Provincial Education Department. In 2008, he was selected into the scientific and technological innovation talents support program of colleges and universities in Henan Province.
