Prison documents in Ming dynasty
As we all know, Water Margin is one of the four classical novels. On the surface, this book describes the story of Song Jiang, Song Wu, Lin Chong, Lu Junyi, Hu Sanniang and other 108 generals, forcing them to revolt, regrouping and rebelling, and finally accepting the appeal and conquering Fang La. But in fact, because the author Shi Naian lived in the early Ming Dynasty, many cultures in Water Margin belong to the Ming Dynasty, especially the description of prisons.

Many characters in the book have been imprisoned. Lin Chong strayed into Baihutang, Lu Junyi was framed, Song Jiang mistakenly killed Yan Poxi, and Song Wu killed Ximen Qing. The prison they face is actually very dangerous. For example, after Lin rushed into Cangzhou prison, he was scolded by the jailer and asked to give people five taels of silver, or one hundred people would be killed.

When Song Wu was in prison, the prisoners kindly reminded him that the jailer had many tricks when torturing prisoners. For example, "hanging basin" is to tie you up first, then wrap you in a broken mat, and finally seal your seven orifices with hay, with your head and feet standing on a wall, and few people die; There is also a kind of "earthen bag", that is, after people are tied up, a bag of yellow sand is pressed on it, and people will suffocate in less than two hours.

These names are common phenomena in prisons in Ming and Qing Dynasties.

In addition, there were many means at that time, such as keeping prisoners awake all night and standing by the wall; Beat the prisoner on the soles of his feet; A prisoner who has no money, a prisoner or a jailer can also strip him naked and torture him. On a cold winter night, he almost froze to death. What's more cruel is that the wound of a prisoner who has just been hit by incense is nominally deodorized. In fact, hot incense will keep the wound bleeding and will not heal for a long time.

In fact, besides jailers, there are many lynchings imposed by prisoners.

be economical

If the new prisoner doesn't pay, the warden (the head of a prisoner in a cell) will beat the prisoner himself. That's not enough. He will summon the heads of all the cells and beat up the new prisoners together.

Wet cloth shirt

When sleeping at night, the warden will spill water all over the floor and then force the prisoners to sleep on it. How can you sleep in wet mud? After a long time, the body will fall into various problems, which is really miserable. The problem is that the jailer doesn't care. In order to get money, they even colluded with prison leaders. Given money, everything is easy to say, eat well and live well; If you don't give money, you will suffer all kinds of hardships.

Snow plus frost-aggravation

The jailer will unite with other prisoners and say that a prisoner can go out often, so the jailer will put a chain on him. In addition to the hands, there will be boards on the body, dark boards on the feet, and the whole body will be wrapped in chains. Let alone walking, it is difficult to move.

There are also hanging people's heads and feet, called "going to a tall building"; Let the prisoner squat down, put it in his pocket, and then pick up his pocket and throw it around. This is called "taking 30% off"; The two men grabbed the prisoner's limbs in tandem, held them high and squatted on the ground, calling them "two-person sedan chairs"; If someone gives a prisoner a meal, he will be robbed by a prisoner who has been hungry for a long time, and he will not be allowed to eat at all, or he will not be allowed to send a meal at all. This is called "please go on the road".

The purpose of all this is not to kill, but to ask for money.

During the Ming and Qing dynasties, some officials had to wear heavy shackles when they first entered the country, and they didn't let go without giving money. Officials often want to sell their real estate and real estate, just to relax and bake. If you don't give money, you will suffer. Give money and it will become a bottomless pit. Prison guards and prison leaders will come to ask for money every once in a while. Under the vicious circle, many prisoners' homes will be destroyed.
