It depends. I studied in America, and when I came here, I had a basic knowledge of English. As far as class is concerned, I can buy an ipad mini with a Bluetooth keyboard, download some note-taking software and a dictionary, so I don't have to bring a notebook and a voice recorder. You can even use the function of ipege to write a paper at any time. The only time I used a dictionary was during an exam. For some exams, I can only use a dictionary or an electronic dictionary.
