What was the funeral custom in ancient times? What is a crock tomb?
Funeral custom is a custom that China has attached great importance to since ancient times. Proper arrangements for the funeral of the elderly are one of the most important events in every family. Nowadays, in many places, people are invited to cry at funerals. Mourning is one of the etiquette of Confucianism. In fact, there are many ancient funeral customs and rules. However, after historical development, the present funeral custom has gradually formed, which is more suitable for the development of the times.

Ancient funerals are generally divided into three parts, namely, mourning, burial and mourning. In this part of the funeral, the deceased will be carried to the bed in the main hall, with his head facing east, and then put on new clothes. Before the deceased is temporary, a new piece of cotton should be put between his nose and mouth. The cotton doesn't move, which means the gas is dead. Then, the deceased should be carried to another bed, covered with a new quilt and put Zhu Yu in his mouth.

In ancient times, there were some special funeral customs, such as "clay pot grave", which was to dig a grave underground, leaving only one entrance and exit, shaped like a clay pot. Before the Tang Dynasty, due to the lack of productivity in some areas, in order to save food, the court ordered people over 60 to be sent to earthen pot graves. For example, when the mother reaches 60, the son will put her in the grave and build a brick after each meal.

There are many reasons for the formation of the funeral custom of "crock grave", but now it seems that there is no morality or humanity at all. In ancient times, there was also a funeral custom called "Kiln Death", which was to dig a cave on the mountain wall or in the bushes for the elderly who lost their ability to work to live in and stay there until their death. A large number of ancient "death kilns" were found in the middle reaches of the Hanshui River and its tributaries at the junction of Sichuan, Shaanxi, Hubei and Henan, which were used to arrange funerals for the elderly in ancient times.

Now it seems that the "death kiln" is inhuman and immoral. However, in ancient times a long time ago, human knowledge and experience were very few and production capacity was low. People in primitive society need very hard work to survive. Only by ensuring their own survival can we ensure the continuation of the ethnic group. People often "control death regardless of life", so the elderly who lose their ability to work go to the "death kiln". At that time, this kind of behavior was not immoral and inhuman.

Funeral customs such as "kiln death" and "clay pot grave" are funeral customs in some areas with low productivity in ancient times. They are formed because of insufficient production capacity. Due to the development of society, these funeral customs have disappeared. Nowadays, respecting the elderly, supporting the elderly and loving the elderly are correct moral and cultural standards, and respecting the elderly is also the most precious traditional virtue of the Chinese nation.
