all one's life

learning experience

Swallow was born in 1943. He studied in a classical high school in northern Italy and then entered the Law Department of the University of Rome. During this period, he has been studying Chinese and China culture in Italian Middle East and Far East College.

research direction

Oriental University is the oldest and largest orientalism research institution in Italy. He began by studying the social history of China and Korea, and wrote several articles about the modern social history of China. Later, his interest extended to the cultural history of China in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, as well as the moral expression, folk customs and psychological state in the same period. By studying the morality in China's traditional culture, he found that the evaluation of emotion and feeling is of great significance. He believes that contemporary China people should be proud of having such rich expressions of emotional life, and their reappearance will not only improve their view of historical heritage, but also benefit their life today. This is the main topic of his research.

academic research

research field

Professor Swarow has devoted himself to the study of the history of China for a long time. Professor Swarow has presided over several studies on China society. One is to study the evolution of moral concepts in Ming and Qing Dynasties, and the other is to analyze the literary and non-literary materials (history and philosophy) in China culture.

Professor Swarow began to analyze the literary and non-literary materials in China culture. His research scope is defined in the last two dynasties of China history, especially from15th century to18th century.

Publishing books

For this reason, he also wrote a book "Research on Emotion and Modal Words in Ming and Qing Literature", which made such intensive and in-depth research on the "emotion" words in Ming and Qing literature. Professor Swarow was also the first western scholar. In this book, the author adopts two research methods, one is a comparative study between China and the West, and the other is an interdisciplinary study. He used the method of comparative study to compare the similarities and differences between Chinese and western views and attitudes on the concept of "emotion" in different periods; His definition of the western "emotion" and his introduction to the position of passion in emotion are particularly refreshing to readers. Since the study of "emotion" can no longer be confined to the field of pure literature, the author discusses the classification, physiological basis, social consciousness and its position in cultural construction from the perspectives of semantics, psychology, sociology and ethnology. Strictly speaking, the theme of this book has gone far beyond the field of literary history and lexicography, but with the help of literature review and semantic analysis, this paper discusses the development and social significance of "love", one of the cultural cores, in the Ming and Qing Dynasties.

Visiting experience

Appointed by the Institute of Asian Studies, he visited Beijing, Seoul, Taipei, Tokyo, Singapore and Hong Kong, and participated in the Eurasian International Conference (1973, Paris Oriental Studies Expert Meeting; All-Europe China Research Association's previous conferences.
