In addition to using appropriate technology to collect solar energy, buildings can also use the light and heat of the sun by adding appropriate equipment in the design, such as giant south-facing windows or building materials that can absorb and slowly release solar heat.
Organic solar energy
With the depletion of petrochemical raw materials, human demand for renewable energy has been paid more and more attention. Solar energy utilization is an endless excellent energy substitute, because the energy projected by the sun on the earth's surface every day is more than 1 10,000 times that the earth needs.
Recently, Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, New Jersey, USA has developed a new technology for manufacturing solar cells, which can make the use of solar energy more efficient and cheaper. In the past, because solar cells were expensive, they could not be widely used in large-scale industries. In the United States, Japan and Europe, only a few solar cells have a power supply capacity of more than kilowatts. None of these power plants can generate electricity as cheaply as traditional burning coal, natural gas and oil.
In the past, the technology and experience of developing solar cells must use silicon chips to capture solar energy, because it is expensive and cannot be widely used. So far, most solar cells can only be used in small household appliances, and there is still a long way to go before they are really used in industry.
At present, the development of reducing the price of solar cells is divided into two directions. On the one hand, it is committed to obtaining light and increasing conversion efficiency. On the other hand, it focuses on manufacturing more modern and efficient batteries, developing cheaper materials or reducing process costs. J Hendrick Schon, a scientist at Bell Laboratories, and his colleagues replaced silicon in solar cells with pentacene, a carbon-based organic substance. Pentacene is a potential semiconductor substance, because it can conduct both positive and negative charges during photoelectric conversion after absorbing light. The researchers put pentacene on the transparent electrode, and on the other side, the semiconductor substance zinc oxide, platinum or other conductive substances sandwiched it like a sandwich. They also found that the efficiency of pentacene solar cells would be better if there was a small amount of bromine in the gap between interfaces.
Pentacene crystal films can only be produced in large quantities by vapor deposition. The best photoelectric conversion efficiency of pentacene solar cells is 4.5%, which doesn't sound very satisfactory, but the efficiency of traditional expensive commercial silicon cells is only twice. Although the efficiency of pentacene solar cell is not high, pentacene thin film can be coated on the plastic surface to increase the price, and its flexible nature can be used in a wide range of fields. So the disadvantage of low efficiency is offset by this feature.
The result of organic photovoltaic cells will make the use of solar energy cheaper and full of prospects.
