Why do high-rise fires spread so quickly?
High-rise buildings in stack effect with vertical passages have various vertical passages, such as stairs and pipes. These internal passages with necessary functions will form several vertical fire holes in case of fire. Once a fire breaks out, the smoke will definitely rise upwards, forming a stack effect in the building, which will help the fire spread. Therefore, in high-rise buildings, the vertical fire will spread faster than the horizontal fire. Standing on the first floor and standing on the 100 floor, the role of high-altitude airflow is definitely different. Under the same weather conditions, high-altitude airflow runs faster, which is the so-called "wind helps fire." Therefore, high-rise buildings burn more violently, which is determined by the high altitude position. The design of high-rise buildings is not conducive to fire rescue. The atrium in high-rise building is a new design concept. Architects want people to feel spacious as soon as they enter the hall, especially in the last decade. This design has its dangerous side. The ground floor of the atrium is mostly a traffic area, where people come and go, and there is no accumulation of combustible materials. In order to facilitate walking, the ground of the atrium is mainly made of wear-resistant and easy-to-clean marble and other stone materials. The danger is that the general building fire spreads upward layer by layer, and the atrium is equivalent to connecting several floors. When one floor is on fire, fireworks can enter other floors, breaking the original style of layer-by-layer closure through the atrium. Therefore, once a fire breaks out, the atrium will spread faster. Why is it difficult to put out high-rise fires? If the ladder is not high enough, the burning intensity of high-altitude buildings must be higher than that of the ground. In addition, it is also related to the level of existing fire fighting equipment. Because of the Olympic Games, Beijing introduced more than 90 meters high fire fighting and rescue equipment, which is the best in China, but it is very expensive, and ordinary cities can't afford it. The fire extinguishing height of conventional ladder truck is 40 to 50 meters. There are many restrictions on helicopter conditions. At present, the use of helicopters is restricted by many objective conditions. The reason why the fire truck can put out the fire for a long time is that it can be connected with outdoor fire hydrants and has sufficient water. Helicopters can only bring their own fire extinguishing agents, so it is rare to use helicopters to put out building fires in cities.
