Why is the citation rate of academic papers low?
Generally speaking, the total number of papers in China is increasing, and the citation rate is also increasing. However, while people are rejoicing, they will also find that the citation rate of domestic papers is still not enough, which is not commensurate with our status as a big country and investment in science and technology; The input changes greatly and the quotation changes slowly. What are the problems in the quality of academic papers? I think there are six problems in our academic papers. The first problem is that the introduction is too general to serve as an introduction. There is no substantive description of the research background, content and work significance. The second problem is that the whole academic paper does not introduce the work of peers. When we put our academic papers in the international context, it is a bit like the papers of primary school students. The third problem is that the author has no weighty literature, and the number of references is too small, some are only two or three, and some have no references at all. The fourth problem is that the important links in the research process lack complete information in writing, and most people will not explain his results in combination with discussion. An important part of the papers on science and technology, science, engineering, agriculture and medicine is to analyze the experimental results, but some of our papers often replace discussion with conclusions. Without discussion, people don't know its importance and innovation. The fifth problem is that the original paper has no first-hand research results. If you study and analyze yourself, you will get the results of others. The sixth problem is that it is against scientific ethics to say that it is the world's advanced level without introducing the existing achievements of similar work and mentioning the degree of research by others. To solve these problems, we should start from many aspects. I think that if we can actively advocate quoting other people's papers, we can solve several of our six problems. If he can quote the paper carefully, the first three problems will be solved, and the fourth problem will be partially solved, because the author will understand what is discussion, what is result and what is conclusion. Without good papers, the author will form a situation in which low-level papers guide low-level papers. Since modern science and technology, there are few laws, methods and achievements named after China people. For example, we have Einstein's equation, but we seldom hear Zhang San's equation and Li Si's equation. We are very sorry. We have our own responsibilities, subjective and objective. In any case, our work is not quoted, which makes us lose a lot of right to speak. Why is the citation rate of China people's own papers low? The citation rate of our academic papers is low, just like grain rotting in a warehouse, and no one finds it. To improve the quality of academic papers, we should start with improving the citation rate. We hope that the citation rate will continue to improve, not only citing foreign papers, but also citing China's papers, not only citing our own papers, but also citing peer, weighty and recognized papers. In my opinion, there are four reasons for the low citation rate of academic papers: the first is the impetuous wind. Some people write papers just to evaluate professional titles, professors and doctoral supervisors, and to get diplomas and degree certificates, as long as they have papers. Publication is the purpose, whether they are quoted or not, no matter who else in the world does the same job with him. Others think that if you quote other people's views, isn't it an innovation? I'd rather hide my ears in order to wear an innovative hat. There is such a thing, I don't quote it, I don't make mistakes, but if I quote it, I won't be awarded the first prize. Why? Not original! This is a one-sided understanding of originality. With the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, there will be the Himalayas and Mount Everest. Without these three levels, there would be no Mount Everest. But many of our papers give people the impression that we can't see his basic work and the work of his peers, and we don't know where his "Qinghai-Tibet Plateau" and "Himalayas" are, but you already know that he is "Mount Everest" and a world leader. This is the impetuous wind. The second reason is the influence of traditional culture, self-modesty, and at the same time, scholars despise each other. Modesty prevents you from quoting the work you did well. A scientist has worked for more than ten years and published at least twenty or thirty papers. He never quotes previous articles when writing his own articles. He thinks this is shameful and will be called self-citation. I don't know when people feel that self-citation is not good. The requirements for the continuity and development of science and technology, no matter who they are, can be cited as long as they are correct. Scholars despise each other and disdain to quote other people's papers. The third reason is that the history of science leads us to quote less. What is the history of science? Because modern science and technology are foreign cultures to China people, they are all imported products, and there is nothing to quote from their own things. There is no need for quotation and no tradition. In western developed countries, citation is a tradition and the morality of scientific and technological circles. The first morality is to quote, and openly say that Zhang San is better than me. This is a western tradition. The fourth reason is that we are immature in science and technology. We have only steadily developed science and technology for 30 years, and these 30 years are very precious to us. However, we must be realistic and say that people have developed for 200 years and 300 years. The immaturity of science and technology leads us to have no reference, but we can't wait until it is mature. We must develop by leaps and bounds So I advocate improving the citation rate of academic papers. First, experts who write papers should quote more papers, including other people's papers and their own papers; Second, experts engaged in science and technology management should encourage all parties to take measures to improve the citation rate and do these two things well. I believe the quality of China's academic papers will be improved gradually. (The writer is secretary of the Secretariat of China Association for Science and Technology)
