People's Republic of China (PRC) appointed Huang Huawei as Foreign Minister, and Japan appointed Tian Yuan as Foreign Minister. After examining the credentials of the other party and finding them appropriate, the authorized representatives of both parties reached the following agreement: Article 1. The contracting parties should develop lasting peaceful and friendly relations between the two countries on the basis of mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, mutual non-aggression, non-interference in each other's internal affairs, equality, mutual benefit and peace. 2. In accordance with the above principles and the principles of the Charter of the United Nations, the contracting parties confirm that all disputes should be settled by peaceful means in their mutual relations, without resorting to force or threat of force. Article 2 The contracting parties make it clear that neither party will seek hegemony in the Asia-Pacific region or any other region, and oppose the efforts of any other country or group of countries to establish such hegemony. Article 3 The contracting parties shall, in the spirit of good-neighborliness and friendship, strive to further develop economic and cultural relations between the two countries and promote exchanges between the two peoples on the basis of the principles of equality, mutual benefit and non-interference in each other's internal affairs. Article 4 This Treaty shall not affect the status of the contracting parties in their relations with third countries. Article 5 1. This treaty is subject to ratification and will come into force on the date of exchange of ratification in Tokyo. This treaty is valid for ten years. It shall remain in force after ten years until it is terminated according to the provisions of the second paragraph of this article. 2. At the expiration of the first decade or at any time thereafter, either contracting party may terminate this Treaty by giving a written notice to the other contracting party one year in advance. In witness whereof, the authorized representatives of both parties have signed and sealed this Treaty. This Treaty was signed in Beijing on1August 2, 978/KLOC-0 in duplicate, each in Chinese and Japanese, both texts being equally authentic.
