Onion contains irritating volatile oil-n-propyl disulfide or propylene sulfide, which is not easy to be destroyed during cooking, drying and other heating processes. Onions or green onions grow more as they get older.
This substance or propylene sulfide can reduce the activity of glucose -6- phosphate dehydrogenase G6PD in red blood cells of cats. However, G6PD in red blood cells can protect hemoglobin in red blood cells from oxidative degeneration. If the activity of G6PD is weakened, oxidants can denature and coagulate hemoglobin, thus rapidly dissolving red blood cells and triggering the formation of Heinz bodies.
