How to write the resume of studying in the United States

Resume is one of the important documents for studying abroad, and many students don't know how to write it. So how do international students write resumes? Let me take you to get to know it.

A beautiful resume can give you extra points.

With the rapid increase of the number of applicants, the number and pressure of enrollment of each admissions officer are very great, and the time for them to review each applicant's materials may be as short as a few minutes. In this case, admissions officers are very inclined to get to know applicants through resumes, so a beautiful and unique resume can play a role in winning the favor of admissions officers or even precious offer or scholarships.

How to make a beautiful resume?

Resume has its basic fixed format. Candidates show their most important and beneficial experiences through their resumes. Then, if necessary, some important contents will be discussed or explained in detail in other documents (including personal statements, letters of recommendation or essays), so that the contents in the resume will be more real and full, and the whole document will help to leave a living, flesh-and-blood you in the eyes of officials, instead of a bunch of boring and rigid documents.

Qualified resumes in the United States basically include personal information, educational background, work or scientific research experience, extracurricular activities, awards, published papers, personal skills and language skills, hobbies and so on.

I. Personal information

Personal information, including name, date of birth, gender, address, contact number and email address.

1) Westerners often confuse surnames with first names, which leads to the inversion of names on I20 forms issued after admission. Then you have to contact the school to modify it before mailing it, which is very troublesome. Therefore, it is suggested that in resumes or various application forms, the Chinese pinyin of surnames should be capitalized, and the Chinese pinyin of first names should only be capitalized, and the order of surnames and first names is not important. Of course, you can also use your name and gender as the title of your resume, such as Mr. Zhang Ming.

2) In the United States, the format of birth date is year, month and day. If 1987 was born on May 28th, then 05/28/ 1987 should be filled in.

3) The address must be filled in accurately, otherwise the receipt of the admission package may be delayed. If the home address is not convenient to receive the parcel, you can write the mailing address and permanent address separately in your resume, so that the school will generally send the parcel to the mailing address. If you live in an alley, it is recommended not to translate the address, but to use pinyin directly.

4) For telephone contact, add the telephone number and area code to the country, separated by a short horizontal line, and do not add "0" before the city area code. For example, the format of Beijing landline is 0086- 10-65229780, and the format of mobile phone is 0086- 137 106666.

5) E-mail is very important, so be sure to leave it valid, because in the application process, E-mail will become the main way of communication between you and the school.

Second, educational background.

That is, education. Write backwards, that is, the recent educational experience comes first. The contents include the name of the school where you graduated/are studying, the starting and ending time, the so-called degree, and the major you studied. If the comprehensive GPA or professional GPA is high or the class ranking is good, you can focus on it. You can also list core courses and some courses related to the application.

Three. Work or scientific research experience

Work &; Research experience. It's time to write down important experiences, and the experience related to applying for a major can be more detailed. Including company name, jobs, main responsibilities and achievements. This part is more important for applying for graduate students, especially for MBA majors. You must write it well.

Fourth, extracurricular activities.

That is, extracurricular activities. It is mainly manifested in the all-round development of personal quality and personal sense of responsibility to the collective and society. Many undergraduate applicants have no work practice and scientific research experience, so write as much as possible in this part. However, you don't need to write anything that is focused, inconspicuous or has little to do with the application major.

The honor won by verb (abbreviation of verb)

Honor. Academic and social activities should be written down. Including the award-winning name, award-winning time, award-winning unit, award-winning reason, award-winning proportion, etc. can be simply explained. If there are outstanding awards in secondary schools that are strongly related to the applied major, they should also be written in. Or the total number of awards is small, and special prizes for middle schools can be added.

Six, personal published works

In other words, publishing. Including book title, author, time and magazine (including page number) (in both Chinese and English, the original magazine shall prevail).

Seven, personal skills

Which is skill. It is best to decide the order according to the degree of relevance to the applied major, and the skills that are more closely related or more important are generally placed first.

Eight. others

Others, including standardized test scores, computer level, main experimental skills, hobbies and so on. If you do well in studying abroad, you should emphasize that each individual achievement should be separated. If you have hobbies that reflect the spirit of adventure and innovation, such as extreme sports and mountain racing, you can focus on them.

The above is the fixed order of qualified resumes, but applicants can make some adjustments to the order of items or the details of contents according to their applied majors and experiences, or add something helpful to the application as appropriate. At the same time, pay attention to the simplicity of the language, and mark the key content, spacing, font and space occupied by each part in bold.

A good resume must make the admissions officer feel neat and comfortable at a glance, and pay attention to the key points you want to express.
