On June 14, 2005, Xu, as the deputy head of the "consultation" group of the Eighth Expert Group of the State Administration of Work Safety, was only 46 years old when he was on the way to Gansu Yaojie Coal and Electricity Co., Ltd. for a "consultation" on coal mine safety technology according to the work arrangement of the State Administration of Work Safety. The cause initiated by Comrade Xu before his death is a major event related to the safety of China's coal mines, the safety of millions of coal miners, and the happiness and well-being of their families, relatives and even everyone. To this end, he devoted his life, explored his life and struggled all his life. He directly participated in and directed the 142 fire fighting and disaster relief work in 63 mining areas in 18 province, saved the precious lives of countless miners' brothers, snatched 690 million yuan of equipment from the fire, created 4.97 billion yuan of economic benefits for coal mine safety, made great contributions to coal mine safety work, enjoyed high prestige in western and national coal mines, and was praised as "fire chief of coal mine" and "honorary miner" by coal mine enterprises.

Safety is a major event related to people's lives and property. When there is an uncontrollable fire in the coal mine, Professor Xu, a famous fire prevention expert, will be invited. In order to ensure property safety and prevent casualties, Professor Xu will go to the fire site as soon as possible after receiving the call for help, carefully analyze the fire and its danger, formulate a scientific and reasonable fire prevention and extinguishing plan, and assist in the fire fighting. Every time Professor Xu rushes to the coal mine for disaster relief, the problems he encounters are often very complicated and extremely dangerous disasters that the on-site engineers and technicians can't control. Specially trained mine rescue team members are very nervous when they go deep into the fire to rescue the disaster, and their legs often tremble and cramp. In order to rescue people and property in the fire area as soon as possible, Professor Xu led rescuers to go deep into the fire for disaster relief many times. His fearless and calm attitude at the scene of the disaster made the rescuers more active and secure in disaster relief, so that they could safely eliminate the danger as quickly as possible. Examples of typical successful experiences
The top coal and the back of Yima Changcun Mine 1998 fully mechanized top coal caving face caught fire in a large area. When entering the working face, open flames can be seen from the gaps between No.8 and No.25 supports, and smoke billows from the working face, and the equipment working face worth more than 30 million yuan is closed. Professor Xu rushed to the mine immediately after receiving the call for disaster relief. After listening to the report, he immediately went down to the fire, stood waist-deep in the water with the rescuers in the smoke and open flame roadway, and worked continuously for several hours, putting out the coal seam fire and eliminating the danger of heavy casualties and property losses.
During the period of 1999, the spontaneous combustion of coal seam in Xiangshan high-gassy coal mine in Hancheng caused a large-scale fire in the main return air roadway, and flames more than 2 meters high were ejected from the local fire area, which seriously threatened the safe production of the whole mine. After receiving the call from the Mining Bureau for assistance in fire fighting, Professor Xu quickly rushed to the scene, led the rescuers to put on breathing apparatus and personally went deep into the fire area for reconnaissance, grasped the first-hand information, scientifically and accurately formulated the fire fighting plan, conducted fire fighting on the spot, finally extinguished the fire area and resumed the mine safety production.
