$60,000 a year, how to apply for a PhD in the United States-how to operate?
I shared with you my experience in applying for a full scholarship in the United States before, and introduced the relevant preparatory work in three parts: overview, materials and English. This article is the last article in the overseas application-operation series.

Applying for a doctoral degree in a foreign university can basically be divided into four steps: magnetic field, interview, submission and visa. This article will also tell you how to apply in detail according to this idea. If you do it, I believe you will get the discount you like.

The so-called "magnetic trap" is to contact foreign professors actively, ask them if they have the corresponding doctoral position, and introduce your work at the same time, deepen his understanding and impression of you and increase the chances of admission.

In fact, it is becoming more and more important to apply for a doctorate abroad, even becoming a step before admission: because if the professor has a relevant position and he is interested in you, then basically he can decide whether to admit you. After all, your doctor's funding mainly comes from his project.

So how to set a magnet with the professor?

The first step is to determine the teacher you want to contact and get contact information such as email address.

Visit interested universities, find relevant professional colleges and departments, and check teachers' personal data. Find a teacher who roughly conforms to your research direction.

Or look for interested professors by reading papers. After master's study and research, students generally know their own research topics, and generally know which professors or teams are engaged in research in this field. You can find their contact information in the newspaper.

Another way to build a magnet is an academic conference. One advantage of attending academic conferences is that you may meet your favorite teachers. This means that you can boldly go forward and introduce yourself, and don't forget to show him your paper.

The second step is to cover the magnetic letters. Here, taking the magnetic letter I sent to foreign professors as an example, I explain how to write letters.

In the first paragraph, introduce your education and ask if you have a corresponding position.

In the second paragraph, introduce your academic work and briefly summarize it. It is best to refer to the professor you want to contact, choose his research direction, and keep the research that is very in line with his direction.

Introduce your academic achievements, write down everything you don't have, and pile up the quantities first.

The last paragraph introduces your academic achievements, and don't forget to attach your resume.

It has been signed.

Because of my general academic level and personal background, I took a very disgraceful road-Haitou. From cattle to ordinary schools, I sent a total of 108 letters to more than 108 teachers in related or similar fields, and received less than 20 replies, only 7 or 8 of them were interested in me, and 4 of them got an interview machine or oral admission. If everyone is strong, you don't need to throw into the sea, just throw a few.

During that time, I woke up every morning to check my email. When I saw the new mail, I was too surprised and afraid to open it. I already have sequelae, and my heart beat faster when I received it.

Generally speaking, the other teacher will reply within 2 days. If it is more than 2 days, there is a high probability that he will not reply, or he has never seen you, or he is not interested in you.

If you are particularly interested in a teacher, you especially want to study there. In case he doesn't reply to you, you can send him a letter a week later to remind him that it may work wonders.

In fact, sending magnetic letters by e-mail is an inefficient way of communication. Foreign professors receive several letters every day, and they are easily drowned in spam.

If conditions permit, we can seek more effective magnetization methods:

For example, let acquaintances submit resumes. If you know the classmates, brothers and sisters of your favorite research group, you can ask them to submit materials, which can greatly enhance the professor's impression of you. I finally got the offer. It was a senior I met there who helped me bring the materials submitted by Dr. Lian Pei.

Find a position through the recruitment posts on the doctoral job website. There are some websites where teachers often post information about recruiting doctors. You can try to log in and ask. For example, on websites such as Woodworm and PhDposition, teachers who post positions on these websites are generally in urgent need of talents, and the response rate is very high.

Or some professional websites will also have corresponding recruitment information. My research direction is computational fluid dynamics. There is a website called CFDonline, and teachers often post positions. Interested students can pay attention to it.

If your grades are good, teachers will usually arrange online or telephone interviews to see if your personal qualities and professional direction are suitable. There are also interviews arranged after submitting the application materials.

Generally speaking, if the teacher invites you for an interview, the probability of asking you is above 50%. They don't spend time with uncertain people, so they must be confident. Getting an interview has shown that they have been recognized by the teacher.

During the interview, the following items are generally checked:

The first is the enthusiasm for academics. This is difficult to inspect, but it is very important, especially for foreigners. So, please pay attention to this and show your spirit for the academic field. Be sure to talk about your passion for academic and scientific research.

The second point is the learning foundation and academic level. In fact, this point has been widely reflected in the resume. The professor may ask a few questions to confirm it, but it is usually very simple.

The third point is the ability of language expression. No matter whether your English level is good or not, you should dare to speak. I met an Italian teacher during the interview. His English accent is too strong for me to understand at all, so he said something during the interview and I said something. I guess neither of them understands what the other is saying. Because of the momentum, the teacher wrote to me afterwards and said that English was good, sahhhh.

The fourth point is the future project and understanding, which is just a general statement, I don't care much. After all, if I go there, I have to do the project again under the guidance of my teacher.

I interviewed three people, one from China and two foreigners. China's teachers are easy to get along with. They generally speak English, followed by Chinese communication. What the teacher said to me the most was "It's not easy to study, and it's hard to be mentally prepared" and "Please come, I won't recruit other students". I can't even say no.

The other two foreigners are also very kind. The Italian mentioned above may know his accent, so he specially found an overseas student from China beside him. If you don't understand anything, the seniors will answer it in time. I felt very chaotic at that time, but I didn't expect it to pass like this.

You can submit materials after contacting the teacher. The materials prepared generally include personal statements, resumes, letters of recommendation, academic achievements, academic degree certificates, and some may need papers and other materials.

Apply online first, submit relevant information and pay the fee. Generally, it costs about $75 to apply for a school (if it is expensive, it costs $750,000 to apply for 10).

Get these materials ready and send them by DHL or FedEx to the address required by official website.

TOEFL and GRE are sent to schools separately, and the cost is not cheap.

Focus on personal statements, PS. Other materials are objectively determined, and only personal statement (PS) needs to be written by yourself. Many people on the internet say that PS is very important and should be written well.

However, because I am basically sure that the teacher wants me to pass the magnetic sleeve, PS should not play a decisive role. I spent more than a week writing a copy and posting it here for your reference.

There are many articles written, please check them as appropriate. Routine is similar to a set of magnetic letters, including personal ideals, personal situation, academic work, academic ability, future prospects and so on. After writing, you'd better have someone check the grammar.

Students who need this can send it to me. I'll take a look at PS or magnetic letter for you if you are free.

Basically, you can get the offer from March to May last year. At this time, you must prepare the last step-visa. After getting the visa, you can buy a plane ticket, contact accommodation and get ready for school.

I wanted to write about my visa experience. First, the time is too long, and second, I have a lot of online experience, so I won't go into details here.

If you have any questions about American or Canadian visas, please feel free to ask me.
