Liu Xiaolong was weak since childhood, and his parents decided to send him to the city sports school to learn badminton when he was 7 years old. Because of the characteristics of left-handed, Xiaolong is particularly valued by coaches, and the purpose of playing ball has gradually changed from exercising to striving for good results.

1999, in order to cultivate new players, the Fujian provincial team made an exception and directly recruited small players from the municipal sports school, and Liu Xiaolong was also recruited. However, due to his weak body and poor physical fitness, the coach arranged for him to practice doubles instead of singles. In 2005, he achieved good results in the national youth competition, which attracted the attention of the national team coach.

In June 2006, Liu Xiaolong was selected for the second national team, and won the runner-up in men's doubles and mixed doubles with Li Tian and Liao Jingmei at the World Youth Badminton Championship in the same year. By the beginning of 2008, he was promoted to the first team again. In April of the following year, he joined Chai Biao in the Asian Badminton Championship held in Suwon City and won the third place in men's doubles. Later, he was sent to participate in the World Badminton Championships in Hyderabad.

Later, Liu Xiaolong was arranged by the coach to partner with Qiu. And achieved good results in many international competitions.

After winning the Sudirman Cup for five consecutive times on May 27th, 20 13, Liu Xiaolong, a newcomer in men's doubles, successfully advanced to the world championship and became the 74th member of the World Champion Club under Li Yongbo, head coach of China badminton team.
