Today, Mr. Xie Zhenlin, a veteran of the New Fourth Army's Taihu guerrillas and a witness of "encircling the mountains", tells the history of that year. Dating back to1September 9, 944, 55 Taihu guerrillas of the New Fourth Army who had been fighting guerrillas on Chongshan Island for a long time were suddenly surrounded by puppet troops for more than 300 days in an attempt to wipe out the anti-Japanese forces in Taihu Lake area at one fell swoop. In the case of being outnumbered, it took 20 days of bloody fighting to break through smoothly.
In order to commemorate the soldiers of the New Fourth Army who died in this breakthrough, Suzhou City built the Taihu Guerrilla Memorial Hall of the New Fourth Army, and named it the patriotic education base of the city, which is open to the public free of charge from now on.
