Date of establishment of Shanghai Conservatory of Music
The predecessor of Shanghai Conservatory of Music was the National Conservatory of Music founded by the great democratic revolutionist, outstanding educator and thinker Mr. Cai Yuanpei and the music educator Dr. Xiao on June 27th, 1968. The first dean was Mr Cai Yuanpei. 1929 changed its name to National Conservatory of Music in September. After the founding of People's Republic of China (PRC), 1956 was named Shanghai Conservatory of Music. From 1949 to 1984, He Luting, a famous composer, music theorist and music educator, served as the dean (later honorary dean), making outstanding contributions to the construction and development of the school. After 1984, Professor Sang Tong and Professor Jiang Mingdun successively served as the Dean, and the current Dean is Professor Yang Liqing.

The college recruits junior college students, master students and doctoral students nationwide, and recruits foreign students. There are 12 departments (departments) in the college, namely, composition and command department, music department, folk music department, piano department, vocal music department, orchestra department, music education department, musical drama department, art management department, music engineering department, modern instrumental percussion department and public foundation department. It involves 6 majors (composition and composition technology theory, musicology, music art performance, recording arts, public utilities management, music technology and art) and nearly 20 professional directions, including traditional majors with solid foundation and several newly-built emerging and interdisciplinary disciplines.

The college has a complete teaching and research system of master's, doctor's and postdoctoral mobile stations established in China. Including four master's research directions (musicology, composition and composition technology theory, music performance, music education); 2 doctoral research direction (musicology, composition and composition technology theory); 1 Art Post-Doctoral Research Center. At present, the college has two key disciplines in Shanghai (dominant discipline: composition and music design, characteristic discipline: music culture history), 1 Shanghai Education Highland (music performance), and E Institute of Music Anthropology in Shanghai universities.

The college has three art centers integrating teaching, performance and scientific research, namely Zhou Xiaoyan International Opera Center, International String Art Center and International Piano Art Center. There are 1 music research institutes, including China-Japan Music Culture Research Center, China Contemporary Music Research and Development Center, Shanghai Conservatory of Music School History Research Center, Music Research Center, Music Education Research Center, Music and Social Research Center, etc. There are six music performance groups: Shanghai Youth Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai Conservatory of Music New Chamber Music Orchestra, Shanghai Conservatory of Music String Quartet, Shanghai Conservatory of Music Percussion Orchestra, Shanghai Conservatory of Music National Orchestra and Shanghai Conservatory of Music Choir. The college also has a distinctive publishing house-Shanghai Conservatory of Music Press, a high-level academic journal-Music Art, a unique museum-Oriental Musical Instrument Museum, and a high-level performance venue-He Luting Concert Hall.

The college implements a consistent system of "large, medium and small" in the teaching system. The attached middle school was formally established 1953, and the attached primary school was established 1956. Over the past 50 years, the affiliated middle schools and primary schools have formed distinctive teaching characteristics and fine traditions, achieved excellent school results, trained a large number of outstanding students who will become famous musicians at home and abroad in the future, and become an important reserve talent training base for our college and various music colleges across the country.

The college has always attached importance to the construction of teaching staff. In various historical periods of the development of the College, there are always a group of first-class famous professors in China and even in the world who are in the leading position in various disciplines, such as foreign professors Cha Halloff, Su Shilin, and famous domestic musicians Xiao, Zhou Shuan, Ying Shangneng, He Luting and Ding Shande. After the founding of New China, a large number of overseas students returned to China and chose Shanghai Conservatory of Music as a platform to serve the motherland. In addition to a group of famous scholars who are active in the front line of teaching as academic leaders, the college has intensified the introduction of talents, recruited talents, and absorbed outstanding experts and scholars at home and abroad into the teaching and management positions of the college, laying a solid foundation for the development of Shanghai Conservatory of Music.

Since its establishment, the College has trained talents from all over the country and even the world, including world-class composers, performers, conductors, singers and theorists. Leading cadres of cultural and artistic institutions and organizations; There are business backbones of music colleges and research institutions and literary and art workers engaged in the popularization of music culture and art. At the same time, the college has made great achievements in teaching, scientific research, creation and discipline construction, which reflects its strong school-running strength. Take the excellent achievements of teachers and students in international and domestic competitions as an example. Since 1950s, teachers and students of our college have won many prizes in international and domestic music competitions, especially since 1980s and 1990s, more than 600 people have won prizes in important international and domestic music competitions, among which 1990 to 1993 students in the middle school attached to our college won the first prize in international music competitions. From June 2005 to September 2006 alone, 23 people won the 19 international music competition award, and 78 people won 56 domestic music competition awards. College is known as "the cradle of musicians".

While maintaining the international advanced level of traditional dominant disciplines, the college actively expands the development space of emerging disciplines, creates new growth points for the construction of disciplines and specialties, and promotes the improvement of school-running level. For example, the newly opened undergraduate majors of public utilities management (including art management, music electronic information technology management) and music engineering have broken through the traditional mode of running a school of music education, taking the lead in enrolling a student in similar universities across the country, and achieved a cross-disciplinary leap in fields including musicology, engineering, electronics and management.

The college has always maintained close contact with world-class conservatories of music and musicians. In recent years, our college has established extensive inter-school cooperation with conservatories in the United States, Russia, the Netherlands, Austria, Norway, Spain, Australia, Germany and Japan. For example, the International Conservatory of Music (School) Dean's Forum will be held, world-class experts will be invited to give lectures, and many internationally renowned musicians will be invited as honorary professors or visiting professors. Among them, famous violinists Stern, Paalmann, Leon Fleischer and Zuckerman; Famous conductors Seiji Ozawa and Simon Ratt; Famous cellists such as Rostovovich and Yo-Yo Ma are all employed as honorary professors or visiting professors in our college. The College also initiated the "contracted professor system" for China musicians who have made outstanding achievements in the world music stage (that is, contracted professors can flexibly choose the teaching time in our college according to their personal circumstances). For example, piano master and Chen Hongkuan, composers Tan Dun, Sheng Zongliang and He An, singers Haojiang Tian and Huang Ying, French horn player Han Xiaoming, cellist Qin Liwei, conductors Tang Muhai and Yu Long all became part-time or distinguished professor. In recent years, the College has successfully held a series of academic and cultural exchange activities with foreign countries, such as Shanghai Paalmann, International Opera Master Class, Seiji Ozawa Master Class, Fu Cong piano master Class, International Clarinet Music Festival, International piano master Class, Zuckerman Master Class and International Electronic Music Week.

At present, Shanghai Conservatory of Music is facing new development opportunities, and the newly renovated and expanded school building will be completed at the 80th anniversary celebration. Teachers and students of Shanghai Conservatory of Music, under the leadership of the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Education and the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government, are striving to achieve the goal of building a world-class conservatory of music, make greater contributions to the construction of socialist spiritual civilization, make positive progress, overcome difficulties, meet challenges and keep pace with the times!
