Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, is a big port in the Caspian Sea and the largest city in Transcaucasia. Located in the south of the Apsheron Peninsula on the west coast of the Caspian Sea. It covers an area of 2 192 square kilometers and has a population of nearly 3 million (2008). Baku consists of 10 administrative district and 46 towns, with an average temperature of 4℃ in June and 27.3℃ in July. Azerbaijan is rich in oil and cotton, which Azerbaijanis proudly call "black gold and platinum". The national emblem of the Republic is engraved with the patterns of oil derrick and cotton bell, which is a symbol of the two major economic pillars of the country.
