Creation background
According to the records of this poem quoted in Lang Ying's Seven Manuscripts in Ming Dynasty, this poem was written by Huang Chao after his last visit. Before the uprising, Huang Chao went to the capital Chang 'an to take the imperial examination, but he was not admitted. The failure of the imperial examination, the darkness of the whole society and the corruption of official management made him more and more dissatisfied with the Li and Tang dynasties. After failing in the exam, his pride doubled. He expressed his ambition by chanting chrysanthemums and wrote this song "The Last Chrysanthemum".
When Huang Chao was in Huizhou, he personally went to the troops stationed in Tonghu. Up to now, the legend of Huang Chao's lighting military parade is still circulating in Tonghu, which is evidenced by a very unique spectacle, "Huang Chao Arranging Troops": In the past, Tonghu was a typical waterlogged depression, and it would be full every year after the dragon boat rain.
A few nights before the flood, there will be dazzling lights on the water east of the lake center at night. One, two, and countless lights will hang in rows and strings on the waves, illuminate the water for miles, and then disappear. People always think that it is the legendary Huang Chao soldier.
Huang Chao also visited Boluo Shiwan to inspect the troops. At that time, the soldiers piled many high mounds to practice climbing the city wall. There is also the place name of Huang Chao Pier in Shiwan, which is said to be the relic of that year. Huang Chao also moved to Gongzhuang to stay. Gongzhuang has the place name of Tianziling, and even there is a statue of Huang Chao in the hole under the oxtail stone of Wei Zi, an otter in the town east. In Gongzhuang, there is another mountain called Zhang, which is also said to be related to Huang Chao.
