Comrade Xie 1960 to 1966 studied in department of engineering physics Nuclear Reactor Specialty of Shanghai Jiaotong University, 1966 to 1970 worked as a teaching assistant in the Physics Department of Shanghai Jiaotong University, 1978 and 1978 worked as a teaching assistant and deputy director in the Laser Laboratory.

The Department of Applied Physics of Jiaotong University is a graduate student majoring in optics. From 198 1 to 199 1, he has been a lecturer, associate professor, vice president, dean (1985) and professor in the Department of Applied Physics. 199 1 to 1997. He has served as member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee of Shanghai Jiaotong University, vice president, dean of graduate school (1994) and doctoral supervisor (1994). 1July 1997 to present, president of Shanghai Jiaotong University.

Professor Xie has been engaged in the research of laser application and crystal nonlinear optics for a long time. He has presided over many scientific research projects and achieved many important scientific research achievements. Among them, "Underwater laser tv" won 1978 National Science Conference's major scientific and technological achievement award, "Flying-spot scanning underwater laser tv" won 1986 National Education Commission's outstanding scientific and technological achievement award, and "Calculation software for optimal phase matching direction of four-wave interaction in biaxial crystals" won 197 the fourth Shanghai Science and Technology Expo's gold medal. 199 1 year 1 was awarded "Master's Degree Winner with Outstanding Contributions in China" by the State Education Commission and the State Council Academic Degrees Committee.
