Now a freshman, I want to go to the United States for postgraduate study. At present, my grades are good, and I hope to go to the top 100 prestigious schools in the United States. How long should an experienced friend say? First of all, all foreign students have to take TOEFL/IELTS regardless of their major, and no one is an exception until the TOEFL score is at least 80.

Secondly, applying for a master's degree in the United States also requires postgraduate entrance examination results, and different institutions require different examination results. Generally, students in China only take two kinds of exams: GRE.

Or GMAT. Anyone who wants to study in business school must take GMAT, and those who study in liberal arts college and engineering college must take GRE. But some majors will be set up in different departments or colleges of different schools. For example, if the financial engineering major is located below the business school, it is necessary to take the GMAT;; If you are a math department or an engineering department, you must take GRE and you may also take GRE and GMAT.

Therefore, it is a major premise to find out what major you study. Many students don't consider applying for any major at all. When they saw other students in GRE class, they blindly signed up for GRE, only to find out that they had to take GMAT after the exam. If you had known the admission requirements of your major in advance, you wouldn't have made such a mistake.

2. Finish the exam before the end of junior year.

It is recommended that you complete all the exams required by American universities during your junior year at the latest.

Regardless of TOEFL, GRE and GMAT, you must finish the exam at the end of your junior year at the latest. Generally speaking, the busiest application period is from September to around the Spring Festival next year. At the beginning of the application, universities are required to provide TOEFL, GRE and GMAT scores, and the scores will be sent directly to the applicant schools through the examination institutions. If you have no language scores when you submit your application, the school will not review your application. Moreover, if you don't get any grades, you can't choose a school for yourself. What's more, the application deadline of many good schools is relatively early, and they stopped accepting applications from February to 10. Without TOEFL and GRE/GMAT, it is naturally impossible to catch up with a large number of schools with early deadlines. Therefore, the best arrangement is to complete GRE and GMAT scores before the end of junior year. Among them, GRE and GMAT scores are valid for 5 years, while TOEFL scores are valid for 2 years.

For those college students who have made up their minds to stay in the United States since college and know what they want to study, they can consider taking GRE/GMAT in their freshman and sophomore years.

Because the pressure of freshman and sophomore courses is not great, the time is relatively abundant.

3. Go all out to reach GPA above 80.

There are often such students: one is that the GPA of freshmen and sophomores is very low, with more than 60-70 points, but the grades are getting better and better from junior year, reaching more than 80 points. But the four-year GPA is still less than 80 points. There is also a class of students who think that they have decided to go abroad anyway, so they put all their time and energy into English training, ignoring the scores of all subjects, and the average GPA dropped below 80. Even though their scores in TOEFL and GRE/GMAT are not bad, their low GPA makes their application competitiveness and success rate worse than those of students with high GPA.

As we all know, the minimum score for postgraduate entrance in the United States is 3.0 (equivalent to 80 points), and applications that fail to reach 3.0 are not dominant. If the GPA is lower than 2.5(75 points), it is difficult to hope to be admitted to graduate school. During the undergraduate period, we must go all out to reach the university average GPA above 80, and the higher the better.

4. Make up the undergraduate background courses required for applying for master's degree as soon as possible.

If you want to go to the United States for a master's degree, you must find out early whether the major you want to apply for requires an undergraduate background and what courses you must take. This is very important for postgraduate admission, and some American universities simply don't consider admission for students without undergraduate professional background. In China, many undergraduates change their majors when applying for American graduate students, which is completely different from or even irrelevant to their undergraduate majors. A student majoring in human resources wants to go to the United States to study for a master's degree in accounting, but he has not taken any accounting-related courses and has no work experience. It is almost impossible for him to be admitted to a good university majoring in accounting in the United States.

5. Have a comprehensive and systematic understanding of American universities, majors and application procedures.

Whether you decide to do it yourself or ask overseas institutions to help you apply for studying in the United States, you must spend enough time during your junior year to understand the admission criteria and application process of American universities and what application materials need to be prepared. As we all know, you should apply for studying in the United States one year in advance. If you are a junior and don't know what school you want to apply for, how can you apply for a senior? However, there are more than 4000 universities in America. Which one should you choose? This is a time-consuming thing, and even Americans have to find someone to consult when they go to college themselves. Even if you have good English and fast reading speed, you may not have this ability. If you are still struggling to learn English and take the TOEFL in your junior year, obviously you don't have the ability. Then you must seek help from a trusted expert studying abroad. Therefore, junior students must know about American universities, majors and application procedures as soon as possible.

Application skills:

A. Find a good referee in advance: it is best for the referee to be someone who has really contacted himself, so that the recommended content is meaningful. For example, people in the industry who have done research or teaching in related majors in the United States, or have worked as mentors for projects together, and so on. Write letters of recommendation for yourself;

B. Individualization of personal statements: personal statements should not be too long, only highlight two or three examples to highlight their own personality, and they should not be identical;

C, pay attention to the deadline: you need to know whether the school you apply for requires all relevant materials to be sent before the deadline;

D. "Bonus points" for domestic certificates: If certificates obtained in relevant professional fields in China can also be presented to American schools as their own application advantages, they will win different bonus points according to the level of the certificates obtained.
