The school has two campuses: Acropolis and Qin and Han Dynasties, and has established a teaching practice base in Lhasa. The school covers an area of 1 149 mu with a total area of 488,973 square meters.

Tibet University for Nationalities, located in Xianyang, Shaanxi Province, is the first batch of Zen Buddhism units approved by the State Council with the right to confer bachelor's degrees. It is a university established by the People's Government of Xizang Autonomous Region and the State Ethnic and Religious Affairs Committee. The first phase of the basic capacity-building project for colleges and universities in the central and western regions was selected as a university, a pilot unit of the excellent doctoral education and training program of the Ministry of Education, a construction unit authorized by the the State Council Doctoral Degree Committee, a counterpart support university of East China Normal University, and a national demonstration university for deepening the reform of innovation and entrepreneurship education.
This school is the first institution of higher learning established by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China in China for Tibet after the peaceful liberation of Tibet. Formerly known as "Tibet Public School", it was established by the central government in 1957 and opened in September/958. It is the first institution of higher learning established by the CPC Central Committee for Tibet after the peaceful liberation of Tibet. On April 30th, 1965, it was renamed "Tibet Institute for Nationalities" with the approval of the State Council. On April 20 15, it was renamed "Tibet University for Nationalities" with the approval of the Ministry of Education.
