The history of the school can be traced back to 1893, and Zhang Zhidong, governor of Huguang, established a self-improvement school at the invitation of the Qing government. After inheritance and evolution, it was named National Wuhan University in 1928, which was the first batch of national universities in modern China. In 2000, Wuhan University merged with Wuhan University of Water Resources and Electric Power, Wuhan Technical University of Surveying and Mapping and Hubei Medical University to form the new Wuhan University.

As of March 2022, the school covers an area of 5 195 mu with a building area of 2.8 million square meters. There are 34 colleges in six universities and three first-class affiliated hospitals. There are 49 first-class doctoral programs, 59 first-class master programs and 127 undergraduate programs. There are 3,862 full-time teachers, 29,450 undergraduates, 20,085 postgraduates, 86 doctoral students, and 623 international students.

Wuhan University of Science and Technology, referred to as "Wuhan University of Science and Technology", is located in Wuhan, Hubei Province. It is a "double-class" university jointly established by Hubei Provincial People's Government, Ministry of Education and six national super-large enterprises. It has successively been selected into the national "Basic Capacity Building Project for Colleges and Universities in the Midwest", "1 1 plan", the national innovation and entrepreneurship training plan for college students, the "excellent engineer education training plan" of the Ministry of Education, the national new engineering research and practice project, the first batch of scientific and technological achievements transformation and technology transfer bases in colleges and universities, the national innovation and entrepreneurship training demonstration base, and the national demonstration universities for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform.
