Central South University was formed in 2000 by the merger of the former Central South University of Technology, Changsha Railway Institute and Hunan Medical University. It can be traced back to Hunan Higher Institute of Technology founded by 1903 and Xiangya Medical College founded by 19 14. It is a comprehensive research university focusing on engineering and medicine, covering science, literature, law, economics, management, philosophy, education, history, art and radiation military science.

Central South University is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education and the Central Government of People's Republic of China (PRC). It ranks among the national "Class A", "985 Project" and "2 1 1 project" and is selected as the leading university in the national "20 1 plan" and "1project".
